Friedrichshafen was one stop in a weekend trip going right around Bodensee (Lake Constance). Click the Europe page for details.
I got off the train from Lindau and walked around the pleasant gardens along the edge of the lake. I saw the monument to Ferdinand Von Zeppelin (in the photos here, born in Konstanz) and discovered that this was the home to the Zeppelin Airship Company and that many ships had been launched from here. I decided to visit the impressive Zeppelin Museum (see tip), and then boarded a bus for Meersburg.
