Check out the church of the Holy Ghost and climb up all 200 plus steps to the steeple balcony. It offers a great view of old town and the Neckar river. The cobble streets and old architecture are very appealing to the eye...as well as the German girls who were all very friendly and helpful. Another thing that I truly miss is the great German food and excellent beer!

the castle and the castle gardens!
At the castle there is a large terrace where you can see the old core of Heidelberg and some surrounding areas. Moreover, going down the exit of the castle you can enjoy a good landscape from some big windows.
The castle gardens are a good place to relax. From there you can see Heidelberg from afar too.
Speyer and the Romanesque Cathedral
by Leipzig
Speyer, with its 50,000 inhabitants, is an old Roman town not far away from Heidelberg. It was made a free imperial city in 1294, and a number of imperial conferences met here. At the Conference of Speyer in 1529 the followers of Martin Luther presented their protest. The city passed to Bavaria in 1815 and became part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate after World War II. The chief feature of Speyer is a Romanesque Cathedral. In 1981, Speyer Cathedral was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Treasures as one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture. The emperors crypt is the resting place of eight German Emperors and kings as well as three queens and is considered to be a symbol of the medieval empire.

Ruined Castles You Can Climb On!
by cruisingbug
Just 16 minutes by train outside Heidelberg in Neckarsteinach lie the ruins of four castles, including Hinterburg and Schadeck Schwalbennest. There is a trail that connects the four castles (one seemed to be occupied, actually, in 1991), so you can walk among them at your leisure. There was no entrance fee, no guards, not very many people when I was there. You can wander around, have a picnic, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Neckar River.
