We recently stayed at The Backmulde Guesthouse, and could not fault it. The rooms were large and airy, with nice shower room, we were made to feel very welcome, and the restaurant was superb, and very popular with the local population. The breakfast was excellent and set us up for the day. It is in a side street off the Haupstrasse, in the old town, near enough to be accessible for everything, but nice and quiet.

Travel Tips for Heidelberg

by Sjalen

Let's face it. Half the joy of being in Heidelberg is about the surrounding scenery with the Neckar valley and so on. Therefore, one of my absolute favourite things to do is to visit the viewpoints. Either Philosophenweg for views across to the Castle and Old Town, or as in these pictures, the many terraces in and outside the Castle for views down to the Old Town. Brewery Vetter. Which has nothing to do with viewpoints :)))

This is the definitive website for planning a visit to Heidelberg. Click on the small American flag for the English version. The site provides all the info visitors will need for accommodations, dining, boat rides, libraries and museums.

The live webcam is great for making you wish you were there. If you know someone who is there, have them go to the river's edge at a predetermined time to get a peek at them having a great time in Heidelberg!

Alte Brücke

by sandysmith

Cross the old bridge to the other side of the town and you have the classical view of Heidelberg - the bridge, the old town and the castle rising above the wooded slopes. To enjoy more views of Heidelberg having crossed the bridge turn left and cross the road at the traffic lights. There is a little opening to your left with a sign saying 'Philosophenweg' - go into this opening and follow the stairs up to the Philosophenweg. There are a couple of strategically placed benches on the way up for those in need of a rest!
Alternatively walk across the new bridge, away from Bismarckplatz. Turn right at the second crossroads and follow the road upwards -pretty steep at the beginning !This is the most expensive area to live in Heidelberg - most of these houses have got great views of the old town and castle. Eventually the road turns into a pedestrian only zone. You'll walk past number of viewing galleries and gardens. Enjoy the view - even better if you take a picnic!

Why not?

by Sjalen

Any visitor to the castle will be told the story of the 1720s court dwarf from the Italian border, who once won a drinking bet against a count and replied "perche no", why not, when the count declared him superior. He then moved to Heidelberg and Kurfurst Karl Philipp whom he could also drink under the table in no time (it is said they once shared 37 bottles in another bet...). Every time someone asked him if he wanted wine, he is reputed to have answered "perche no" which soon gave him the assimilated nickname Perkeo and this is why you will find many hotels and other things bearing his name in the city today. Perkeo eventually died after drinking pure water once by mistake the legend claims - not the healthiest of drinks in them days - but this is probably not true. The Perkeo Society which arranges various parades and other events can tell you much more.

Relax by the Neckar.....

by Maryimelda

About 9kms outside of Heidelberg, near a place called Schleuse, there is a lovely garden restaurant, "Gasthaus zum Ankor", right on the banks of the Neckar in a wonderful country setting. It even has a barn next door housing milk cows and their calves. This has to be one of the most peaceful places I have ever enjoyed in Europe. We sat in the garden and ate Bratwurst and chips washed down with red wine for me and Radler (shandy) for my friends. Afterwards we took a walk up the river to the lock gates and all around were cornfields, apple trees and beautiful horses. This was a highlight of my entire 6 week holiday.
