There is the castle. In the castel you can visit an apothecary museum. Also, you can see the biggest wooden barrel ever to have been filled with wine. The barrel was constructed in 1751 and can hold over 221,000 litres of wine! There's a little walkway which takes you across the top of the barrel (used for dancing).

A picture postcard town
by Gypsystravels
From the top of Heidelberg Castle you have these wonderful views of the Neckar River, Old Bridge, Old Town and Philosophenweg.
I loved just looking out to the Neckar River and the bridge and just imagining how it must have looked in the 1800's. The Philosophenweg looked wonderful with all the trees in vibrant color. The rows of homes nestled nicely in the landscape make for wonderful picture apportunites.
Views of Old Town and the church below where quite breathtaking as well.
Heidelberg Tip

Inside the castle grounds (courtyard), you'd be quite impressed with the different sections and architecture of this castle. Really! And on one side of the courtyard lies the entrance to the Cellar where the GROSSES FASS ('Big Barrel' or 'Big Tun' as it is being called) is found. Er... and don't worry, no extra payment is required of you to enter. Well, in case you didn't realize, the Big Barrel is infact the biggest wooden barrel ever to have been filled with wine. Amazing. (See photo below). The barrel was constructed in 1751 and can hold over 221,000 liters of wine. Cheers!

Heilegenberg and the Philosophenweg

Exercise and a rewarding view -- even pituresque ruins. In neuenheim, find the beginning of the Philosophenweg behind O'Rielleys. The view of the Schlß is remarkable. But then go higher -- you'll find a tower and a better view. And all the way at the top (~500m): a ruined monestary, a Nazi ampitheater, and a beergarden. Don't cheat and take your car, but don't even attempt it on a bike unless you're in training for the Tour de France.
