Private Transportation in Heidelberg

by dwelch

I want to visit some small villages near Heidelberg.
Are there any reliable private driver services for hire.

You'll find more if you google for "Heidelberg Limousine Service" or "Heidelberg Chauffeur Service".

Never used such a service. Not even a taxi in Heidelberg. Public transport is quite good. Esp. to the villages/towns at the Bergstrasse (OEG trains) or the Neckar Valley (S-Bahn lines S1 and S2).

or use the DB timetable which knows all about pulbic transport (trains, trams, buses) in Germany.

If you have the names of the villages we might be able to offer some alternatives to a private driver. When (month) will you be in Heidelberg? How are you arriving in Heidelberg and will you be staying in the area? The train station has an excellecnt information desk to help you if you're arriving by train. English is widely spoken there and the people are helpful as they're accustomed to tourists. P.S. Columbia where?

We will be in Heidelberg on April 3rd and 4th. The villages are Asbach and Hoffenheim. I know there is a train connection to Hoffenheim. I know the bus
will get me to Asbach, but the time schedule is lengthy and will take all morning and I don't expect to be in Asbach but a hour or so. I don't want to
waste a whole morning on it. That's why I was asking about a private driver.
I'm in South Carolina, USA.

A "private driver" is not very usual in Germany. I guess you can ask a taxi driver, but the costs will be exorbitant. Otherwise, you might consider renting a car for a day.

From a certain distance on you can negotiate the prices with taxis freely. You can do this already in advance with the taxi company. Will be mostlikely less expensive than the links I gave in my first answer. Here you'll get an English speaking driver, an upscale car and whatever you like - but this comes for a price.

What does not exists are any sort of private taxis, i.e. where people drive you for cheap with their own cars, like they exist in some countries.
In the moment you drive in Germany someone around for money, you need the qualification, drivers class (transport of persons), health check etc. etc. to do so.

Travel Tips for Heidelberg

There is the castle. In the castel you can visit an apothecary museum. Also, you can see the biggest wooden barrel ever to have been filled with wine. The barrel was constructed in 1751 and can hold over 221,000 litres of wine! There's a little walkway which takes you across the top of the barrel (used for dancing).

A picture postcard town

by Gypsystravels

From the top of Heidelberg Castle you have these wonderful views of the Neckar River, Old Bridge, Old Town and Philosophenweg.

I loved just looking out to the Neckar River and the bridge and just imagining how it must have looked in the 1800's. The Philosophenweg looked wonderful with all the trees in vibrant color. The rows of homes nestled nicely in the landscape make for wonderful picture apportunites.

Views of Old Town and the church below where quite breathtaking as well.

Heidelberg Tip

Inside the castle grounds (courtyard), you'd be quite impressed with the different sections and architecture of this castle. Really! And on one side of the courtyard lies the entrance to the Cellar where the GROSSES FASS ('Big Barrel' or 'Big Tun' as it is being called) is found. Er... and don't worry, no extra payment is required of you to enter. Well, in case you didn't realize, the Big Barrel is infact the biggest wooden barrel ever to have been filled with wine. Amazing. (See photo below). The barrel was constructed in 1751 and can hold over 221,000 liters of wine. Cheers!

Climate

by keeweechic

Germany has a moderate climate with the summers usually warm but pretty cold winters. The warmest months of the year are from May to September. The average temperature in July, for instance, varies from 16C to 20C (61F to 68F) according to the location. In January, the variation is from -1C to 6C (21F to 34F). There is no particular rainy season.

Heilegenberg and the Philosophenweg

by eliowny

Exercise and a rewarding view -- even pituresque ruins. In neuenheim, find the beginning of the Philosophenweg behind O'Rielleys. The view of the Schlß is remarkable. But then go higher -- you'll find a tower and a better view. And all the way at the top (~500m): a ruined monestary, a Nazi ampitheater, and a beergarden. Don't cheat and take your car, but don't even attempt it on a bike unless you're in training for the Tour de France.
