Heidelberg is Germany's most romantic city, and a big tourist hot-spot.
There are numerous guided tours of the city, the castle, the specific historic sights and buildings...

Heidelberg also have a very good network of public transport, and the old town (which is the biggest attraction) is easily explorable on foot.

The town is easy enough to explore on foot. City tours are available with a guide
Most tours start from the University platz by the fountain - between April and October they run in English at 10.00 am. No charge if you have the heidelberg tourist card. I prefer to get a leaflet from the local tourist office and do my own walking tour at my own pace - allow 2-3 hours for this.
The lion fountain (the heraldic animal of the Palatinate) is in front of the old university building. The University was built 1712-28 by Johann Adam Breunig for Elector Johann Wilhelm
One of THE most wonderful views of Heidelberg is from the Castle. I was simply awestruck and to top it off, it was a beautiful, clear sunny day. You could see the Neckar River winding its way along the city - the Heiliggeistkirche - the Old Bridge - Bridge Gate - etc. Hans and I and the others truly enjoyed it up there.
On the way to the castle, we were standing in the middle of the street looking at a map and this little old lady came from nowhere and asked us if we needed any help. Her bit of advice to us was 'Just stop and ask, everyone speaks english.' This is very true. However, they tend to appreciate it if you make an attempt to speak to them in their own language...so try to brush up on a little German.
I spotted this plaque in the side of a building as I wandered round the centre of Heidelberg. Its on a small road which runs parallel to the river towards the Old Bridge gate. It's quite small, and above head-height, so easily missed.
I assume it is an indication of ownership (I'm not sure the building was originally a dwelling-place).
I particularly like the bulls head coat of arms: very impressive!
