Another hausbrauerei

by bonio about Kulturbrauerei

Our walk too us past this one too, had to call in, didn't eat, but sampled a couple of their excellent beers. Have a small beergarden, an art gallery! jazz some evenings and I think it's a hotel too. The menu looked tempting but, we'd just eaten, guess I should go back?

Lots of Beer has Passed Through Here....

by ExGuyParis about KulturBrauerei

A traditional Brauhaus, with an outside beer garden in the warm weather. The original brewery was built almost 800 years ago. That's a lot of beer.

Traditional German fare, and a great selection of beers. This is a loud, fun place-- very welcoming for large groups as well.

There is also a hotel, with beautiful rooms in the range of 120 € for a double. See the website for maps and much more information. Beer.

Beer is culture

by Sjalen about Kulturbrauerei

I found this place on internet whilst looking for a hotel, since they also have that (which turned out less convenient with a child, but otherwise looked cosy). When it also turned up in kitan's beer book, it was time for a visit. We went there just before lunch so we never tried its food (some a bit more expensive than elsewhere) but the menu looked marvellous and, again, full of seasonal things from the forest. The atmosphere was great although we were early and the huge hall was rather empty. They recommended their "seasonal" brew which was a wintery porter and it was absolutely delicious. This is the sort of place that must be high life at night :) The porter.

What a shame...

by Husker_Jeff about Kulturbrauerei

What a shame. This is a place with so much potential - great outdoor seating, great indoor dining hall, good food, they brew their own beer that is much better than the standard Heidelberger Pils and Hefeweizen, and it's a little off the main street so it doesn't have that Hauptstrasse feel.

The problem? The service. And I know not to expect too much in such a heavy tourist area, but the service was so bad that it became a joke by the time we left.

We noticed this when we initially sat outside. There were at least 12 people there in their work clothes, but only one seemed to be interested in getting us a beer. Some people at an adjacent table got quite frustrated and went inside to get another beer. What's worse is that some of the staff who had arrived but were not yet working were sitting right next to us and seemed to take pleasure in the fact that people were being ignored.

We moved inside for dinner and the staff kind of looked around to see who might volunteer to wait on us. I was thinking perhaps we looked like some sort of mutants, but when I looked at the pictures later I noticed that Nicole was looking rather cute.

We ordered food and a glass of wine. The food was good. Nicole had some bratwurst, I had weisswurst.

We ate the food and drank the wine and then decided to see how long it would take for someone to ask us if we wanted another drink. We put the empty wine glasses at the end of the table, in plain view.

Not counting servers who were carrying food, 29 servers walked by without blinking an eye - including our own server numerous times. Then we decided to look them in the eye until we were acknowledged. The second server to walk by made eye contact and actually tried to look away! I gave the little raised eyebrow and I guess she finally decided to put herself out and stop to see if we needed anything.

It was rather unbelievable. This place could be a gold mine for someone who could manage it properly. Maybe it's already a gold mine and they simply don't care about service because big groups keep coming in regardless. The Beer
