Try Hotel Heidelberg, I stayed there years ago and enjoyed it, but I do not remember if it is near the train station. Cheers Tommy x

Leorado Hotel Heidelberg that is a Best Western, is next to the rail station

I know it's a bore to carry your luggage around, but if you're staying 2-3 nights, wouldn't it be worth it to stay more central instead? Heidelberg is such a lovely town, and after a day of sightseeing, you may want your walk into town for a restaurant or a pub to be quite short (especially afterwards!).

I agree with ATLC...the station is quite a way from Heidelberg's rather lovely historical centre.

Have a look at www.booking.com for hotels. It's a reliable site with honest guest reviews, good mapping and good rates.

I agree, staying in the old part of Heidelberg will be better. The station is not too far outside, but if you are walking around in the old town, it's nice to simply go back to the hotel room without waiting for the tram. VT member Maryimelda recommends the Hotel Goldener Falke

www.hrs.de is another very good website to look for hotels.

But it's cosier to live in the old town, but then you'll take the S-bahn to Altstadt and don't jump off at Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof.

We stayed at the Denner Hotel next to the old town area, which was about a 15-20 minute walk from the train station. I don't recall seeing any hotel worth staying at by the station, but then again I was not looking. There are several local trams that can take you to and from the station. The Denner is a two star, with a great breakfast included, a large room, but the ambiance was lacking. Next time I would stay closer to the Old Bridge. Karl

Travel Tips for Heidelberg

Altstadt (The old town)

by Leipzig

The old town, nestled on the banks of the river, is simply charming with all its tiny winding lanes and alleys. The Altstadt district is for pedestrians only which is very pleasant as you won't get disturbed by honking cars and ringing bicycles.

explore the HEIDELBERG CASTLE....

by Krystynn

explore the HEIDELBERG CASTLE. If you come to Heidelberg and yet don't visit this castle, you can't claim to have seen everything here. For, this is what Heidelberg is reeeeeally famous for. And here I am on the castle grounds in the middle of spring where the temperature was a chilly 0° celcius that morning. Brrr....

OLD BRIDGE - KARL-THEODOR BRIDGE - 1788

by LoriPori

The Baroque OLD BRIDGE or KARL-THEODOR BRIDGE, spans the Neckar River. It's one of the most famous sights in Heidelberg. The Bridge has a length of 200 metres and a width of 7 metres. The Bridge Gate at the south end of the Bridge has existed since the Middle Ages.
The Bridge is open 6 to 10 for automobile traffic, but otherwise it serves as a pedestrian bridge. State Road 37 passes right by the Bridge. The next day, Monday, Hans and I actually drove past here on our way to Mosbach

Heidelberg Christmas Market

by christine.j

Heidelberg's Christmas Market is spread out through the complete length of the main street. There are some empty spots in between, but basically you can buy a glass of Gluehwein at the Bismarckplatz, drink it while walking up the main street and have it refilled two or three times until you reach the Karlsplatz. The ice skating rink is situated there, though if you're still able to do some ice skating after all the Gluehwein, I don't know.It may just give you the best kick to get going.
The ice skating rink is open until 6 January, 2008, from 10 - 21:30 daily.

The landmark of the Christmas Market is the Heidelberg Pyramid. You can't miss it on the Marktplatz, it's huge. The characters doing their ride on it are from Heidelberg's past, starting with the caveman Homo Heidelbergensis to the last ruling Prince-Elector Charles Theodor and finally the Student Prince.Of course the court jester Perkeo is also shown, holding up his beloved wine glass. The unhappy princess from Heidelberg, living at the French court, Liselotte is riding there as well. She actually looks unhappy, but I suppose this is due to the carving, not due to her psychological condition.
The Christmas Market opens in the last November days and closes just before Christmas Eve, this year from 28 November to 22 December 2007.

Packing List

by Angela0667

Be sure to bring tissue with you! I was unable to find any except on Base. If you have allergies, bring some medication. I didn't need mine every day - just the days we went into the mountains. It does rain and when it does....it gets cold!
