Is there aTourist Map/Guide of Heidelberg online?

by ringleader

I'm looking for a tourist map/guide of Heidelberg Old Town for free (online) that is printable and has the major sightseeing landmarks marked. Does anyone know where I can find one?

Here is one just of the Altstadt (old town) which shows also the sights.

At the tourist offices you can also buy a "Heidelberg Guide" (1 Euro) with official map, walking tour of the city and further information to sights.

Travel Tips for Heidelberg

by sabsi

Heidelberg is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Germany. Especially Japanese and American tourists as well as members of the US Army living close to here seem to love this rather small city in the German federal state of Baden Württemberg. There even is a Hard Rock Cafe here - a chain you don't find in many places in Germany. Even though there are many tourists here the place isn't destroyed by tourism. It kept its old time charm pretty well actually. When buying a postcard the guy in the shop talked to me in English. They don't seem to get many German in these shops in Heidelberg... Which surprises me because I have met quite many German tourists here as well. After all it's a perfect day trip destination if you don't live too far away!

Die Alte Brucke.

by Maurizioago

The Alte Brucke (the Old Bridge) was built in stone between 1786 and 1788 by prince elector Karl Theodor. The preceeding bridges were built in wood and had been destroyed by floods, fire and ice. During WWII the bridge was destroyed by German soldiers, but it was quickly rebuilt in 1947.

On the southern end of the bridge there is a Medieval gate named Bruckentor with two cylindrical towers. This gate was originally part of the town walls.

When I visited Heidelberg the bridge was covered with scaffoldings, so I didn't take any pics of it. On this pic you can see the bridge from afar.

Help for the Disabled

by tini58de

When in Heidelberg you might notice quite a few people in wheelchairs and maybe you notice more hearing impaired persons as in other places! Part of the reason might be that there is a rather huge rehabilitation center in Heidelberg!

Annual Castle Illumination = Schlossbeleuchtung

by JessH

Three times each year residents and visitors alike can enjoy the spectacular castle illuminations & fireworks behind the scenes of the old town Heidelberg. Just after sun set the castle-lights are turned off, the fireworks are launched from the Old Bridge. This event really is worth the wait... it's specatular!

Dates for the year 2010:

-> Saturday, 5th June 2010 - approx. 10:00pm.

-> Saturday, 10th July 2010 - approx. 10:00pm.

-> Saturday, 4th September 2010 - approx. 10:00pm.

If you want to keep yourself busy until the event starts, why not attend the concert at the Church of the Holy Spirit? This starts at 06:15pm and gets you in a romantic Heidelberg-mood... Tickets to all concerts can be purchased in advance by calling the Ticket Hotline: +49 (0)6221 - 582 0000.
The Castle Illuminations have a romantic origin: in 1613 newly-wed Prince Elector Frederic V welcomed his new wife, English princess Elizabeth Stuart, to Heidelberg. She received a royal welcome with a splendid event: our dearest, lovey-dovey and devoted prince ordered for the castle to be illuminated by bright colors, and star balls were to be seen high above the Neckar River.

Where's the best place to watch this display? Just follow the crowds! On the opposite shores of the Neckar river you'll get the best view.
