Moving to Mannheim with US Army

by piercingcat1979

Hi,
I am moving to Germany in the Mannheim area in 7/2010 for a few years. I am trying to meet people or chat with people who can offer me advice on what to bring or not to bring. My husband in in the Army and I am a professional body piercer so we have a diverse interest group. So if you have any info links on websites (in english) or info on turtoring in German as well. Thanks for all your help.

Hi - a great source for info/advice is an expats group. We have a great group here that has helped alot of newcomers adjust to life in India. Just google "expats mannheim" and you'll see a bunch of listings pop up. Locals can offer advice but expats usually have valuable tips and a common bond as well. Good luck with the move.

Donna is absolutely correct. You cannot do better than hooking up with other Americans that have already done what you are about to go through.

Here are some samples. Someone already sent you toytown:

Travel Tips for Mannheim

There's a star up in the sky ...

by chicabonita

... in the Planetarium you can learn a lot about the stars. During the 45 minutes of the show we heard so much that I really couldn't remember everything ... But any way it was great! www.planetarium-mannheim.de

Hockey

by tessy

Are you interested in hockey?
Yeah, go to visit the Adler Mannheim (The Mannheim Eagles), the German Champion 2001! They won the championship in 2001 for the 5th time! And in 2002, the Eagles are the 2nd, in 2003, they are not in the final. :-(

Wonderful experience

by tessy about Osaka

I was invited in Osaka restaurant and it was the first time I was there. It was a fantastic experience for my eyes and my tongue. The cook was at our table and prepared the food. Watching him preparing the food was almost so wonderful as the meal. Most of us ordered the Edo menue. You get meat and also fish. Just delicious! The other dishes, I din#t try and see. But there are as well smaller dishes than a menue.

Lovely Architecture

by tini58de

Although Mannheim is an industrial city which has been destroyed to a great extent during WW II, you can still find wonderful architecture in the city itself. To understand a little about the history and consequently the destructions and rebuildings of many of the Mannheim buildings, do have a look here.

The old parish church at the market

by christine.j

The church and some city offices share a spire, overlooking the market square. On market days, Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday mornings, the church is hard to see, as the square is full of vendors, shoppers and people just looking. It's a beautiful church, especially the spire. There are chimes in the spire and and when you enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in the outdoor area of the Café Journal, you can listen to the music.
