Geometrical city
by tini58de
The old part of Mannheim is built in an absolutely geometrical way - which is quite unusual for German cities. The streets have no names, but only numbers in the horizontal way and letters in the vertical way. Thus there are some real strange addresses in Mannheim: the school on the picture is found in E7!
There is a real interesting article about the Mannheimer Quadrate - sorry, it is in German only!
SV Waldhof Mannheim

A pic of Manheim with the Carl Benz Stadion on the left, home of Waldhof Mannheim footbaal club. No game while we were there but the stadium looks OK and they need all the support they can get at the moment so, one day maybe?
Maredo is our favorite...
by mrsdouglass
Maredo is our favorite restaurant. It was recommended by another VT member. It's located in the pedestrian zone downtown. It's an Argentine steak house, but they serve a variety of foods, including German, Mexican and American fare. My husband spent 2 years in Argentina and says the steaks are very close to the real thing (although he says nothing is as good as what he had in Argentina). I've personally had a mexican style chicken breast, beef fajitas, and schnitzel. They've all been great, but I highly recommend the schnitzel (you're in Germany, afterall...). They also have a great kid's menu. The best part for me, though, is that the menu is available in English (and German, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese). The prices are also quite reasonable. Our bill usually runs around DM 50 (around $25 USD) and that includes an appetizer, 2 entrees, a child's meal and drinks.
The menu is available in several languages and they are very tolerant of 2 year olds. They even give out goodie bags of toys, candy, coloring activities and crayons. The staff has always been very friendly and they are patient with our poor German language skills. Schnitzel with steak fries. The schnitzel is a large, juicy cut of pork with a crisp breading. It's served with fried and seasoned potato wedges and sour cream. It also includes one trip to the salad bar.
Main Station
by Leipzig
The main station was erected between 1871 and 1876 to connect Mannheim with Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Because of the rising amount of passengers the station was enlarged in the 1920s. Air raids in the 1940s destroyed large parts of the station and the station was rebuilt in a more modern style. In 1985 it was enlarged again and today it is a hub for ICE and EC.
The watertower
by christine.j
THE landmark of Mannheim is the watertower. When you look at ten postcards of Mannheim, it's on 9 of them. That's the reason I don't put a picture of
it here, but a picture of one of the gargoyles.Instead of looking at the watertower as such, have a look at the details, many gargoyles, figures from Greek mythology, the sphinx in front of it.
Around the watertower there are several parties going on throughout the year. It is also the place where the Christmas Market is held from end of November to shortly before Christmas.
Opposite of the watertower the main shopping area of Mannheim starts. So when you're sitting in the streetcar and see the watertower, you know it's time to get off if you want to do some shopping.
