Transport from Frankfurt Intl airport

by kwokwh

Please tell me the method to transport from Frankfurt Intl airport Terminal 1 to Schwetzingen. I was told by my agent that I should go by train. Is the tain station near the airport? Which route should I take?

Re: Transport from Frankfurt Intl airport

by Trekki

Frankfurt Intl. Airport has an own train station. This is called Frankfurt Fernbahnhof" (while the one in the city is called Frankfurt/Main HBF, HBF = Hauptbahnhof, main station).

To get there from Schwetzingen is pretty easy, you will have to change trains in Mannheim. The trains leave from Schwetzingen at 2 min. past the hour, arrive in Mannheim at 18 min past the hour, leave from Mannheim at 35 past the hour and arrive at Frankfurt airport at 66 min past the (first) hour, e.g.:
8:02 - 8:18: Schwetzingen - Mannheim,
8:35 - 9:06: Mannheim - Frankfurt.
There are additional ones at half past the hour but only at (departure from Schwetzingen) 9:32, 13:32, 15:32 and 17:32.
Price is 23,50 Euro one way.

You have to take a train to Mannheim, then change into a local train to Schwetzingen. There are direct trains from the train station in the airport to Mannheim. Expect to pay about 20 Euro.
You can check times and fares at www.bahn.de.
Click on English for the English version.

If you don't want to go to the train station in Schwetzingen, but to another part, you can also take a bus from Mannheim train station, which will take you around Schwetzingen. Where are you going to stay?

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en will give you timetables and fares.

It's about an hours train ride with a change at Mannheim. The train station is connected to the airport. You will need to depart from Fernbahnhof (long distance trains - it's a 10-15 min walk via walkways/escalators from the airport terminal - I did it last week). Note that there is also a Regionalbahnhof for regional trains.

Your hotel is within walking distance from Schwetzingen train station. Have a look at google maps:

http://maps.google.de/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Bahnhof,+Schwetzingen&daddr=Carl-Benz-Str.+1,+Schwetzingen&hl=de&geocode=&gl=de&mra=ls&dirflg=w&sll=49.380585,8.580494&sspn=0.010407,0.019248&ie=UTF8&ll=49.380585,8.580859&spn=0.010407,0.019248&z=16

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: FRA
To: Schwetzingen

You can buy tickets online or on spot. Standard fare tickets are flexible. Thus you can take any later connection on the same day.

Thanks, all your information as very useful.

Further questions:
1) When I buy ticket from Frankfurt Fernbahnhof train station, should I buy ticket to Mannhein first. And then I buy tickect to Schwetzingen at Mainnhein?

2) How close is my Hotel to Castle?

Re: Transport from Frankfurt Intl airport

by Trekki

I leave the train ticket question to @abalada, no one answers these questions better than him/her.

Your hotel is 400 m from the castle. I don't know if you can read the following link properly (because it is from my google version), but this would be what google maps suggest how to drive:
http://maps.google.de/maps?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&channel=s&hl=de&source=hp&q=schwetzingen&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=de&ei=TrCgSr3AGtLFsgbO693SBA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1
But then, this is how to go there by car. The route to walk must be different, because the one for cars won't work in the beginning. But the hotel staff will be able to mark the best way to cross the train tracks in a map.

You can buy a ticket from Frankfurt Airport to Schwetzingen. No need to buy seperate tickets.

The castle is about 1.5 km from your hotel. You definitely should visit the palace garden. It's a must see. The castle itself can't be visited because it houses offices of some authorities and a law college. I studied there and lived for one year in the castle, because the students dormitory is in the castle as well.

If you time enough, absolutely visit the castle gardens, they are beautifully laid out and maintained. The castle itself can only be seen with a guided tour. Some info is here:

1) When I buy ticket from Frankfurt Fernbahnhof train station, should I buy ticket to Mannhein first. And then I buy tickect to Schwetzingen at Mainnhein?

You can buy tickets from Frankfurt Airport to Schwetzingen at Frankfurt Fernbahnhof. Or even online.

Frankfurt Airport - Mannheim by ICE is EUR 22,50
Frankfurt Airport - Schwetzingen (ICE to Mannheim + regional train) is EUR 23,50

VRN single ticket Mannheim - Schwetzingen is EUR 3,50.
OK this would also cover the trams and buses in Mannheim and the buses in Schwetzingen. But as you won't need these for this journey, the normal train ticket Frankfurt Airport - Schwetzingen is the better deal.

The station is Schwetzingen Bahnhof. Travel time from Mannheim is just 11 minutes. Make sure to be at the door when the trains pulls into the station, the trains stop for a very short time only.
Some weeks ago I again saw a tourist missing his stop, because he started getting his bags only after the train had reached the station. By the time the tourist was at the door to get off, the train had already started again and the tourist couldn't get off.

Travel Tips for Schwetzingen

Schwetzingen - A Real Gem

by scottishvisitor

Schwetzingen is a tiny old town nearby Heidlberg and Mannheim. Most people miss coming here in favour of bigger places with more attractions. I enjoyed every thing Schwetzingen had to offer. The town is a quiet, quaint, unhurried little gem. I particularly enjoyed wandering around some very quiet streets. The details on the houses captivated me with their colourful floral boxes, the little chickens on the slate porch roof, the flower design on the brick work and best of all, the use of trained trees to enhance more modern buildings. I have many many memories of Schwetzingen = if I had a favourite memory it would be something I cannot picture - the sound of the Church Bell when it broke the silence in this sleepy place.

History and style

by tini58de

The statues in the palace gardens of Schwetzingen are a fantastic example of the various architectural epoques of this place:

you will find lots of statues (and of course other architecture) from the Baroque area - these are mainly the ones with themes from the antique mythology.

The reasonable, rationalistic view of the Enlightenment is reflected in the geometrical views of the gardens, but also in some of the statues.

The Romantic period stresses the concept of nature with its imitation of natural moods, landscaped areas and statues of birds, deer etc.

Quite fascinating, isn't it?

The End of the Earth or just an illusion

by scottishvisitor

Imagine coming out of your bath to see this scenic place through the colourful arches intwined with ivy and vine. You might think you have been transported to a distant land, Ingrid called it her Patigonia, but our other guide laughed and remarked that it is just an illusion. Well Germany is famed for its Fairy Tales which surprise and delight - as does the pretty arch and its illusion of a far off place - which if you walk a bit further you will see the reality for yourself!

Rathaus - Town Hall

by Kathrin_E

The town hall is situated opposite of the catholic church, corner Hebelstraße/Zeyherstraße. I do not know an exact date when it was built, but according to the style it must be between 1805/10 and 1830. It shows the typical classicist style the construction administration in the state of Baden used for all public buildings in those times.

The Orangerie

by tini58de

The Orangerie is the oldest building designed by the architect Pigage and was finished around 1763. Its original purpose was to house the exotic plants during the cold winters. Today you can find an exhibition here which displays the original sculptures from the palace gardens.

The exhibition of the working utensils is also part of the Orangerie - please see my "Off the beaten path" tip!
