Fountains in the castle garden
by tessy
In the baroque park, they have lots of different delightments, such as a temple, a roman aqueduct, a bath house, some exotic plants, several illusions, a mosque with a turkish garden, a castle, etc. It was a kind of Disney land for the people of the baroque age.
White Asparagus
by Kathrin_E
Worshipping white asparagus is almost a cult in certain regions of Germany. The area around Mannheim, Schwetzingen, Heidelberg, Bruchsal with its sandy soils is one of Germany's big producers of asparagus.
The cultivation of asparagus in Schwetzingen started in the 18th century. In the beginning the vegetable was grown exclusively for the kitchen of the Electoral court. Asparagus culture has later spread both to the fields and the plates of the whole region.
The asparagus season starts, depending on weather conditions, some time in April and ends on St John Baptist, June 24. Asparagus season is celebrated as some kind of cult. All restaurants offer special asparagus dishes. Every club or group will organize a "Spargelessen" at a restaurant, a social event that mainly involves - guess what - the consumation of asparagus.
Asparagus is traditionally served with new potatoes, sauce hollandaise or butter, and ham or bacon. A Baden speciality are thin pancakes with fresh herbs.
Local asparagus is on sale at the market in Schlossplatz. If you want to buy asparagus, check if it is really fresh: when rubbing two asparagus sticks together they must squeak.
Don't forget your camera

I usually have a small back pack for holding my rain jacket, bottled water and some snacks. We did a lot of walking so comfortable shoes or walking boots are a must We took lots of pictures so extra film or extra memory card is a good idea.
Sculpture: The Claque
by Kathrin_E
The funny group of applauding claqueurs, which all look alike, is put up on a street corner opposite of the town hall and the catholic church. Interprete this the way you like...
The bronze sculpture was created by Guido Messer in the 1980s.
Footnote: I just found on Nemorino's Pforzheim page that there is a more or less identical sculpture near the theater in Pforzheim.
PARK: The Baroque Garden
by Kathrin_E
Baroque gardening involved forcing the plants into ornamental or geometrical shapes. Even nature had to obey the will of the absolutist ruler. Baroque gardens have few flowers. Typical for them are flat parterres with fields of coloured gravel between low bow tree hedges. Further away from the palace, trees were planted as boscages and accurately cut into the desired shapes. Needles to say that this type of garden needs a lot of maintenance.
