Fauststube Im Löwen
Historic Faust hotel
In the old center of the town, on the central plaza, close to the city hall, one can find the oldest guesthouse (inn) in Staufen. It was built in the 15th century and has been restored over the years. Doctor Faust, also known as a the magician who made a pact with the devil, spent here his last days around 1536, in room number 5. However the hotel disposes of several modern rooms in it's new wing, the original number 5 room is still available. Apart from the bathroom, it seems it almost hasn't change since Dr Faust died. This room is the special attraction of the hotel.
Unique Quality: What to expect: a lovely old room with a sculpted dark wooden bedbox and antique furniture. Windows with leaded glass, showing the painting of Mephisto. A German corner seat and writing table. A small television (digital TV), a bathroom with shower.
The least I can say is that this room has character.
Minus: the cleanliness is not impeccable. The wall-to-wall carpeting shows several stains, however the Oriental rug upon the carpet was neat.
The shower curtain is not fresh and the room smelled like Mephisto just left.
However, we closed our eyes for the imperfections. A night in room number 5 is an experience. The bed is good and we slept like a log.
The staff is extremely nice and the restaurant is wonderful.
Tip: Like most hotels in old town centers, this hotel has not enough parking places available. However, there is plenty of space on the public parking lot. Free of charge for hotel residents! This is a plus.
The first photo shows the sitting room and the second the bed box.
Directions: On the central plaza of the old town. Next to the City Hall.
