Rental Car returns on Sunday

by bct341

I was looking at rental cars from the Stuttgart train station but I wanted to return the car in a town closer to Tubingen (such as herrenberg, Plochingen, Reutlingen etc). Basically, I want to rent a car Saturday late afternoon and drop it off on Sunday afternoon. However, most rental car companies are closed on Sunday (except at the Stuttgart train station and airport). But, I am not sure if any have after hours drop off service.

In the U.S., most rental car companies have after hours drop off, does anyone know if this service is available in Germany especially at some of the towns between Stuttgart and Tubingen?

I would think so, yes. Usually, there's a letter box where you throw in the keys.
If you want to make sure they have an after-hour drop-off service, you may want to contact the car rental.

I don't know which rental firms you have looked at but ...Sixt ....does have after hours drop offs at certain places. Ring them and ask for your towns, but don't book with them over the phone you'll pay more. Go back online and book on the net.

Thanks..

I checked Sixt and they have a service called E-return which uses an integrated responder chip to record the dropoff time when you deposit your car key after hours. I have to check with them to see if this is available at all Sixt locations.

Sometimes they have arrangements with nearby hotel receptions, especially near railway stations, where you can drop off the car and keys.

Re: Rental Car returns on Sunday

thanks for your reply....a hotel is an option.

hopefully, Sixt will work out for me since the drop off box would be the easiest solution.

Re: Rental Car returns on Sunday

Always depends on the location of the company and the drop-off box. For example, in the city of Ulm they - I think it even was Sixt - had a drop-off at the Intercity hotel at the railway station. Their proper drop-off box would have been in an industrial zone from where you would have needed a taxi (and 15 Euro) for getting back into the city. I am sure there will be a good solution for you, as they are a big operator.

The Stuttgart Train Station Hertz Station has a all time drop of by letter box. As ALL the rental car companies share the same office, I think this is valid for the others as well.

From Stuttgart Station you re in Plochingen within 20-25 mins with S-Bahn ( Metro type train) for less than 5 €.
Stuttgart - Tübingen using train within 1 hr for 10 €.

Non-Stuttgart car rentals are not necessarily at a station, and you will need a Taxi as well !

If you drop off the car at the Airport, you ll need longer to other places , as it is far outside ( S-Bahn to Stuttgart 20 mins )

good luck, Günther

Forgot to mention, some rental car companies require an age of 25 years or more.

thanks for the info...

I ended up renting from Sixt since they had a drop off box for after hours... But each rental agency has its pros and cons so I chose different ones for different reasons every time I travel :)

Travel Tips for Stuttgart

Looking northwest from the station tower

by Nemorino

When you turn around and look to the northwest, over the roof of the railway station, you can see a small vineyard on a hillside right near the center of the city, behind the office building of the German Railway System.

Munch, munch, time for brunch

by jayhawk2000 about Various little bakeries

The Germans are famous for their love of coffee and cake. No matter where you go, you will see lots of brightly-lit bakeries selling gorgeous towers of sweets, cakes, pretzels, sandwiches, pizzas and other quick bites. You really can't go wrong and it's easy to score a cheap breakfast or lunch.

This particular bakery in the main photo is on Konigstrasse, the main shopping street leading from the Hbf, and is typical of many...huge, chewy croissants were the order of the day, accompanied by tepid, watery coffee. It became the theme of our most recent visit to Germany...terrific baked goods and terrible coffee! The only place in Stuttgart I can recommend for coffee is the Bar Tabacchi behind the town hall. It is also a great place to get stuck into your fruhstuck (breakfast)...we came here every morning of our first trip to town! They do a good breakfast with boiled egg, ham, cheese, croissant and coffee for about 5 euro. They also stay open late in the evening if you fancy a nibble.

Celebration of Life!

by Beograd

See ppl in the pic? Well, they are just following the instructions given by band. Seriously! The band actually stands on the stage and as they sing, they tell the crowd what they should do next. It's fun and it's funny because you have to have in mind the amount of beer these people have had. Everybody sings and dances disregarding the age and sex. You even have groups of people coming dressed in the same T-shirts representing their regions, cities, towns, sports teams etc. Many foreigners come to enjoy this great festival and are warmly welcome by the locals as they are helped with the instructions the band is giving to the people by their German speaking "comarades in beer".
