Stuttgart low cost accomodations/family history

by Bourisseau

Hello,
We will be traveling in Germany during the last week of July 2008. We are a family of 4 (children 11 & 13) and would like to find a nice place to stay around Stuttgart that doesn't cost too much. We are also interested in trying to research some family history. My wife's family name is Bracher and the family oral history is that her ancestors were officials in Stuttgart in the early to middle 1800's.

On the family history side, you can look at the follwing sites on the web: http://www.rootsweb.com/~eurgaesr/index.html, and also: http://www.genealogy.net/index_en.html. There are many, many more sites available. Although you can get the home page of many sites in English, the records will still be in German. They have a translating service on the web called "Babylon6", which you can download, that may help somewhat. The have a short free trial, but then it becomes a service you pay for. If I get back to researching my genealogy this winter, I may put it back on my computer. I'm finding that "oral" family histories can be a bit frustrating. Even if the info is correct, there usually are a lot of gaps that complicate things. Good luck on your search and enjoy your trip. Gary

Thanks for this tip. We have made arrangements to stay in the hostel for 3 days at considerable savings. It also looks like it will be a great experience for our kids. The hostel looks beautiful and the staff were very helpful as we communicated through emails.
Thanks again,
John

United Buddy Bears in Stuttgart

by Cristian_Uluru

I was very lucky to find the United Buddy Bears in Stuttgart. From 9th July until 12th August 2008 these exhibition was set on Schlossplatz. The Buddy Bears were designed by 140 artists from all over the world and it shows 140 bears in different colours!!! It was fantastic.

The Freshmaker!

I don't know if this is the best way to get 'to' Stuttgart considering the Autobahn, but I'd have to say it is definately the best way to 'around' it: The 'smart' Car. I love this machine. It's the result of the finest minds from Mercedes and Swatch getting together to design the ultimate city car. A fun project to do while here, is to photograph each and every different smart car you see. They come in so many different colours, and many different companies use them as little rolling billboards so the range of variety is truly astounding. If you're able, do take one for a spin: it feels like being in a mentos commercial. Forget about Porsche, Audi, BMW, Opel and Volkswagon, these are like big go-carts and loads of fun to zip in and around traffic with, especially if you're in the mood to torment that older, stoic German who just sneered at you from behind the wheel of his Big-Black-Behemoth.

Mövenpick at Schlossplatz

by sabsi

Well the restaurant itself is nothing fancy but the view from the terrace is wonderful.
It's good that one side of the Schlossplatz (Palace Square) is ugly (the one with the restaurant) and one side is beautiful (obviously the one with the palace!). So from the ugly side you have a perfect view over to the beautiful side! The view! Well and the Swiss Rösti was nice, too.

Mercedes - Benz museum

by bonio

Traces the history of the world famous automobile manufacturer. Many exhibits to admire including some very old ones. One question I've yet to have answered, The oldest exhibits were right hand drive, when did Europe change to driving on the left?
Anyway, an enjoyable visit for us and good value at 8 euro entry.

Kirche St.Maria

by bugulma

It's the Catholik Church in the center of the city. This picture was made in January 6 and there was service of Africans. They sang cheerful songs. The main woman were in white toga or smth and all people greeted her and kissed her hand.
