Stuttgart to Ramstein AFB
by italia4mifamiglia
I need to get to Ramstein AFB from the Stuttgart Airport. I'm traveling with 2 elementary school children. What's the smartest, cheapest way to get there? Thanks for your help.

With two small kids I would rent a car. You can get there by train/bus, but it involves taking a train to Stuttgart train station, a train to Kaiserslautern (including another change) and finally a bus to the base. If you decide going by train, have someone pick you up in Kaiserslautern.

Don't know if there is a bus station close to your final destination.
Children 6-14 are free if travelling with a (grand)parent.
If you don't mind the 2 changes train will be the cheapest and most relaxing way to get there.
Travel Tips for Stuttgart
Big Bear
by suubi
Surely you can´t be looking for elephants in Europe or specifically Stuttgart but tell you what, even the ones in Wilhelma zoo are real. Originally King Wilhelm I of Württenberg intended to build a summer residence surrounded by adornment and buildings in a Mauritanian style, just like in a fairy tale. This formed the foundation of the present day Wilhelma containing over 8000 animals of about 1000 species. My favorites are the water bears which inspire with there elegant movements. The new tropical house is also fascinating. Moreover the zoo reflects King Wilhelms fantasy of a fairy castle.
Refreshment counter in the opera house
by Nemorino
Here is part of Stuttgart's solution to the age-old problem of getting hundreds of people their drinks in just a few minutes at the beginning of the intermission in the opera house. Of course you can also get a drink or a snack here before the opera begins.
This round counter at the level of the first balcony (I. Rang) is in a new round glassed-in pavilion at the Stuttgart Opera House. (Photo taken from one flight higher, looking more or less straight down.)
See the next tip for a view of this pavilion from the outside.
Homeland Museum of the Germans from Hungary
by csordila
The Gerlinger Homeland Museum of the Germans from Hungary represents a department of the city museum Gerlingen. There in the context of the sponsorship of the city Gerlingen is kept alive since 1969 the cultural inheritance of the Germans who were chased away from Hungary. Beside traditional costumes also furnishings are shown. Most of the objects exhibited in the museum are gifts from the people of Gerlingen.
Open Tue 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., Sun 10 a.m. - noon and 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Neues Schloss (New Castle)
by Roadquill
The New Palace in the middle of town is somewhat of an anamoly in that from outside the Courtyard you have no clue what this building is. I couldn't even tell you if you could go inside and what would be there. There are two imposing statues in front, one of a lion, the other a stag that are interesting.
Duke Carl Eugen von Wuerttemberg (1744 - 1793) had the last large Baroque residence castle facilities in Germany built. He demanded from the city and the Wuerttemberg representatives of the orders that they build a "proper residence which is convenable to his royal dignity and the amplitude of his royal household" because he wanted to make Stuttgart to a second Versailles.
The cornerstone was laid on 3 September 1746. The building master was Leopoldo Matteo Retti, a nephew of Donato Giovanni Frisoni, the builder of the castle in Ludwigsburg. Between 1746 and 1751, Retti built the main building, the so-called Corps de Logis and the garden wing. In doing so, he used the contemporary architecture of France as an orientation.
Today the New Castle is the home of the ministries of the Baden-Wuerttemberg state government and representation rooms.
Altes Schloss

I think that the old castle is much nicer than the new one, but that's my personal impression. It has a nice yard inside.
In the building you will find the national museum of Baden-Würtemberg.
