Esslingen- best of Baden Wurtemberg in one place
by Kristina_Tourist
hallo, i live in Germany for a half year and i've been in most of the places in Baden Wurtemberg by now. And i take all my friends who come here just for a weekend to Esslingen. Esslingen is a small town very close to Stuttgart and has it all- the beatiful old city with a Rathaus, a castle on the hill, from where you can see all the area, small cosy cafes and just in just in the very center of the town the vineyards from which the view to the city is the best. And of course its on the river Neckar- Neckar here makes a strange figure so that the half of the old city is actually an island. Most important that on Christmas time they have a wonderful medieval market all over the old city. I recommend it if you dont have much time and want to see the typical town of Baden Wurtemberg.
Haute Cuisine in a castle
by AndreSTGT about Speisemeisterei
This is Stuttgart's poshest and most renowned restaurant, highly-decorated with two Michelin stars. It's located in a stately castle in the suburb of Hohenheim and the dining room is sumptuous splendour taken to new heights. The service is predictably perfect and so is the food, mostly French haute cuisine with subtle attempts at fusion. Set meals cost between 69€ for 3 courses and 135€ for 8 courses which can be chosen from the a-la carte menu. Not exactly cheap, of course, but in this case one has to consider cooking an artform and the chef being the artist who sells his oeuvres.
While i thoroughly enjoy enjoy the food at such establishments i usually find the atmosphere a bit stifling, too formal for my taste, but that's the only complaint i have, apart from that everything was perfect.
You absolutely have to visit...

You absolutely have to visit the Fernsehturm (TV-Tower) where you can overview the whole city and the landscape around !!!
The Fernsehturm was build in 1956. It is 217 meters high. At the top you can enter the viewpoint platform or visit the gourmet restaurant.
Botanical Garden and Zoo
by aah_stone
My initial plan was to visit the botanical garden and not the zoo, as I am not usually one for going to zoos. However, I found out that the botanical garden and the zoo are the same place. Oh well I was going to visit the gardens anyway.
Wow. I was not disappointed, the garden was tremendous. You start by walking through the greenhouses where there are many beautiful plants. A toucan greets you in the first one.
After that there is the rest of the extensive gardens and zoo to see. We tried following a suggested route signposted. It was generally easy to keep to but we did stray occasionally by accident.
There are more ponds and greenhouses to see. We were here in good weather so it was nice to sit and admire.
The main part of the zoo was actually very good. Although I did feel that some of the enclosures were a bit small. That being said most of the animals were happy and healthy looking. The penguins even had their own fridge :)
A very entertaining and pleasant afternoon. I would happily visit again
Cost - €10.20 or only 7.00 in winter

Alte Kanzlei
by antistar
The Old Chancellary was built between 1541 and 1543. It was originally the administrative building for the state, like an uber-rathaus, where the Duke kept track of all the local wealth that he wanted a piece of, as well as being used as a store and guest house for visitors. Today it is used for cafes, restaurants and bars. It is distinguished by a water column topped with the gilt statue of the Roman god Mercury, made my Ludwig von Hofer in 1862. You can find the Alte Kanzlei next to the Altes Schloss, on the left as you look at the two buildings from Schlossplatz.
