What to do on a Monday afternoon?

by Grananny

I will be in Stuttgart for one day in May 2011, and it happens to be a Monday. It seems all the museums that I thought to visit are closed on Monday. What else is there to do in Stuttgart on a Monday afternoon?

German cities each have their own website from where you can get plenty of current tourist information.
Also, you can have brochures sent to your home. It's what I prefer personally and at least you'll have a city map on arrival!

Here's a link
http://www.stuttgart-tourist.de/ENG/search_book/broschueren.php

Look carefully through the list and chose anything that's in English. If you chose brochures that cost something, then you can pay a voluntary 5.50.

Of course the winter season comes first. So you may want to wait a little bit for the summer brochures.

May 2011 is tourist season. There'll be guided city tours or you could make up one of your own. Lots of architecture. An hour or so behind a big German beer or coffee and their famous pastry shouldn't be a punishment either!

Catch the s-bahn to Ludwigsburg and visit the Palace:
tram to Degerloch, ride to the top of the Fernsehturm for coffee and cake:
cruise on the Neckar:
visit the Wilhelma, a mixture of Botanical Garden and Zoo
look up the website for Binder Busreisen and see what day or half day bus trips are available
Train or bus to Freudenstadt in the Black forest, a beautiful town for a wander, another town worth visiting is Wildbad.

Margsch has given you some good ideas - but the closest and most spectacular town to visit in the vicinity is Esslingen. Not many people know how fantastic this place is, with spectacular churches, many historic buildings all over the place, you stumble from one great attraction to the next, a castle amidst vineyards overlooking the city, the romantic Neckar river area, some fabulous Swabian restaurants with local fare, local wine etc.

I have lived in the vicinity for ages but had only seen pockets of Esslingen until on my last Germany holiday I met up with VT members Kathrin_E and Russell_the_Wombat just there. They have already posted a lot of photos and tips on their pages, so have a look there and get inspiration.

Another famous and fabulous town on the river Neckar, not too far away from Stuttgart is Tübingen.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely look at both of those locations. How fun that you were able to meet up with a couple of VT friends!

Travel Tips for Stuttgart

Tourist Information Office

by ATXtraveler

When you are getting to Stuttgart for the first time, I highly recommend stopping into to the Stuttgart Tourist Information Office, which is located directly across the street from the Stuttgart Hbf (main train station). After arriving on your train, leave the platforms, and follow the escalators down to the underground shopping area, and follow signs to KoenigStra(B)e. Once you are going on the up escalator back from the underground shopping area, the tourist information kiosk with be on your immediate left at the top of the escalator. This location is very convienent and has accommodation booking areas, local tour ticket information, as well as plenty of reading material to plan your journey. It also contains local maps, train schedules and local art shows/markets.

Take a trip to Ludwigsburg

by jayhawk2000

En route to Marbach, we stopped off at Ludwigsburg thinking we'd have a quick peep at the ducal palace and gardens.

WELL, we were surprised to find it's a blinking ENORMOUS complex which probably deserves a full day at least! There are TWO palaces stuffed with art and antiquities plus acres of gardens, not to mention the town itself which has two churches on the main square nearby. You can learn more about the town at ludwigsburg.de

Ludwigsburg is on routes 4 and 5 of the S-Bahn, bound from the Hbf for Bietigheim and Marbach respectively. It's a rather meandering 15 minute walk to the main plaza and you have to go with your instincts in places when the signposts disappear.

We'll do it properly on our next trip, more tips and pics soon!

Three favorites...

by Jim70563

I have three, Taipan Chinese restaraunt here in Vaihingen, the Max & Moritz's Italian restaraunt in Stadtmitte Stuttgart, And the worlds best Kebabs at Deniz's Kebab in Stadtmitte!

All 3 have excellent customer service. All allow a feeling of privacy even if the room is packed... Taipan makes a mean Sesame Chicken....

Max & Moritz's makes a Tortellini in a Ham and creme sauce that I have not become bored of in over five years....

and Deniz's Kebabs are made with fresh baked bread....just walking in can charge your appetite.

Main Railway Station

by barbskie

An interesting architecture built in 1927. Located in downtown of Stuttgart. The facade was covered with rough-textured shell limestone shaped into rectangular blocks. The station is classified under monumental
protection .

Stuttgarter Staatstheater

by Bigs

This theater has a very good reputation. It offers a wide choice of culural activities. Next to the usual plays, it's also home for the opera and the ballet.

The building itself is quite nice too, and it's also part of the upper castle garden.
