Where are you travelling from? Are you sure there is no way to avoid having to change in the middle of the night?

I don't know about the station in Ulm, but I do know that Mannheim train station closes at night and people are not allowed to stay there.I hope for you it's different in Ulm, but I'm not sure it is. Is there no other train you can take?

I found also that waiting rooms were closed at night and to wait on a cold train platform is just too awful. I would definitely change the train selection, if you could tell us exactly where you are starting from, and I gather your destination is Salzburg, we can give you a better option.

What time of the night do you travel?

I know the station in Ulm.

If the waiting room is closed you can store your luggage in a locker (costs only a few Euro) and go to a bar and have a drink or two. There are some in the vicinity of the railway station.

There is an Intercity Hotel right at the station - but the bar is only open until midnight.

If the waiting room is closed, there are seats in the centre of the arrival/departure hall (beside the ticket machines) where you can sit. They will surely not lock up the station if trains are still coming and going. Otherwise no-one would be able to walk to the tracks.

Travel Tips for Stuttgart

Canstatt Wasen

by daryll

The Canstatt Fair is second best Stuttgart event after Oktoberfest. Feast and fair available for all ages. Pints of beer, barbeque German sausages, ice cream, amusement centres and folk dance is overwhelming.
I could still remember the sweet tasty Black Forest ice cream top with fresh cherry!

The Porsche Museum.

by Todd64

The Porsche Museum. It's not actually inside Stuttgart, but just outside in Zuffenhausen.
It's ironic, but you could easily drive by it and being a big fan of motor racing, I made sure I did'nt.
It's not very large, but the history inside is great: they actually have Ayrton Senna's Porsche powered Formula 1 McLaren on display, as well as many vintage speedster's, 911's, LeMans winners and the like. Pretty cool if you like that sort of thing.

Best halloumi in town

by Ianchen about Pinar

Pinar was one of the first Kebab-places in Stuttgart to sell Halloumi, fried cheese. It's delicious! It makes a perfect fast lunch, dinner or after-party-food - they are open really long, I think like 5am or something on weekends. They are on Theodor-Heuss-Strasse, the clubbing street.
They also have yummie Doener Kebab, Lahmacun, salads, Pizza and many more. Most things are around 3 to 5€. Halloumi Spezial: Halloumi in a Yufka with fried vegetables.... awesome.

Hauptbahnnof main train station

by daryll

Getting down from the Hauptbahnnof Stuttgart main train station is a good start to explore the long shopping streets which eventually lead you to the Stuttgart square meanwhile observe the amazing architecture of the main train station

Weindorf (Annual Winefest)

by sniem

Stuttgart is a city of wine the vineyards almost reach the central station, and every year in August the annual Weindorf is takes place for about ten days. The whole Marktplatz and Schillerplatz are full of little booths where the local restaurants and winebars sell wine and food. The younger people meet at the Schillerplatz and there especially in the area in front of the Altes Schloß (old castle) In 2003 the Weindorf last from August 27th to Sept 7th.
