We have stayed at A&O hostel in august 2006, we were travelling a group of 6 people and the cheap dorm rooms of this hostel seemed ideal for just one night (it was about 15e per person). The staff is friendly but always busy, you can hardly ask a question there but other travelers will show you the way, the reception was very colorful by the way and I liked the traffic of the numerous happy travelers around (pic).
The hostel is huge, kind of noisy of course with all these crazy teenagers all around but you will love it if you are on your 20s and looking for other travelers etc
There was no breakfast included, the rooms were small, very simple but clean, the private bath/wc was clean too.
The location was weird, above a nightclub but the general area has a lot of cheap restaurants, some pubs etc It’s located 100m from the Zoo station and 200 from the famous Kaiser Wilhem Gedchniskirche.

cheap and nice
Got there and everything was there for us. Only problem was that we didnt realise we had to pick up our bed linen from reception but that wasn't a problem.
We got a room to ourselves for our group and te price was very cheap. The hostel has a bar which is outside (with a smaller bit inside) and was always busy with travellers willing to talk to you and socialise. I met loads of different nationalities there (Korean, American, Australlian, Latvian, British, etc).
Unique Quality: The Hostel is right next to Berlins biggest zoo, a massive park for strolls and a busy bus station and train station too meaning it is perfect for getting around. Shoping complexs are very near and for the familiar fast food chains, KFC and Burger King are very close.

Perfect for Younger People
Basic Rooms, which is all you need when your visitng somewhere anyway, but are ideal for a budget! Best to make sure you have enough people to fill it though to ensure you're staying with people you know!
The Hostel has 2 great bars. The indoor one is perfect for during the day or the "recovery pint" for the night before. The top one is perfect for using before you head out but in fact it's open quite late so you could have a good night in there too for cheap!
Unique Quality: Really central. Next to the Berlin zoo and a giant park which is normally full with loads of people on a nice day. The 2 bars in the place are realy good too and the staff are friendly!

One night in Berlin
I booked a bed in a dormitory online - 13 euro per night + 5 euro for breakfast. They charge 3 euro for linen unless you have your own (linen or a sleeping bag).
Checking in ok, no problems, staff spoke good English (I talked to about 4 different employees).
There are two bars - the bigger one opens in the evening - the noisy music is not disturbing the sleepers, they must have good walls :o)
Eating is forbidden in rooms as is taking away food from breakfast hall (breakfasts from 7-10 in serve-yourself style) - they offer lunch packages for 3,50 euro.
Check out until 12, luggage can be stored in a luggage room.
Unique Quality: Hostel is well situated about 30m from train station so I had no problem to find it.
There are no keys in the hostel - instead magnetic cards are used, very modern indeed. No problems occured once I found out which side to put it in :o))
Hostel is surrounded by 4 fastfoods - German, American (Burger King), Turkish and Chinese. Sex shop next door :o)

bad cheeta bad !
It was really a horrible mistake to stay in A&O for 2 days. The first day they give us 10 % discount on rent, we are being students. The next day they said they have different tariffs on different days (always it goes high) and they offer student concession in particular days only.
Moreover we met one briton there paying more than us, the same day for the same kind of bed ...!!!

very experinced and helpfull staff, the best location as you can find the hostel just beside the Zoo station

It is located just in front of the railway station Zoologischer Garten. It allows you to book, to check-in and -out all around the clock.
room choices for backpackers:
- You sleep from 13 € per night in a dormitory, have access to warm showers and toilets on the floor.
- For a couple of euros more you can have private facilities.
- You can also book a "Backies Special" 42€ for 3 nights an a dormitory incl. Backies Brunch incl. linen
Add 7€ extra from March to October.
Not possible for Loveparade and New Years Eve.
Out of our offers for backpackers they also have single-, double- and multi-bedded rooms for individuals and groups.

Helpfulness
In the heart of Berlin
Its prime location makes it very reasonable. Further more it has, 24 hour service, multilingual staff, no curfew, credit cards acceptance, cooking facility, internet access, bar. It has nice and clean atmosphere.
