Berlin apartment

by thomtony

We are a mature couple making our first trip to Berlin for many years in early October. Does anyone have suggestions on a quiet area of the city which has good public transport access to the centre and where we might be able rent an apartment?

Re: Berlin apartment

the website fewo24 has apartments but I think it is only in German. Select Berlin then Ferienwohnung(holiday apartment), I had a look recently for a friend and there was quite a large choice.

I stayed here : http://www.booking.com/hotel/de/classic-apartment.en.html quite recently and is sounds exactly what you are looking for.

The apartments are on a quiet side-street a couple of minutes walk from the Adenauerplatz U-bahn station (from which central Berlin is about 10 minutes journey). On the same street as the apartments are a couple of supermarkets, a laundrette and a couple of cafes and around Adenauerplatz itself you have pretty much everything else you could need regarding shops and services.

The apartments are clean and well-furnished with a well-equipped kitchen and the balconies are a bonus when the weather is good.

Soviet Memorial

by bugulma

Not far from Brandenburg Gate, on the Juni 17 street. The memorial was built after WWII by architect Sergievsky and sculptors Kerbel and Zigal. I was really surprised to see Soviet signs in the city of Berlin because there were a lot of TV news in Russian television that showed how many of Soviet symbols were destroyed in Eastern Europe. I don’t think about the future of this memorial. It is and it’s a memory of WWII.

What a pattern!

by matcrazy1

Excuse, it's more German or maybe Prussian than Berlin custom.

I noticed that Germans built their houses with small bricks of various colours in the past. The colours created various patterns. You can often see brick houses with usually horizontal, vertical and oblique brick lines - perpendicular one to each other. The color bricks were often replaced by wood creating brick - nogged - timber - walls called "Prussian wall". You can see it either in Berlin/Germany and in parts of Poland which belonged to Germany in the past including my hometown.

Sometimes, especially on churches or other "more important" buildings the brick patterns were more complicated like on the round wall of the apse of St. Mathew Church (St. Matth?us Kirche). Enjoy :-)

Marzahn

by diocletianvs

Marzahn was once a showcase of Honecker's efforts to create model town for the citizens of the GDR but unfortunately little is left of its original idea. I am not sure about this but I have a feeling that this was also one of the first models of new united Germany dealing with "ugly communist buildings". During the renewal process someone obviously had too much of the colour paint - almost every balcony is painted differently and some facades now look like the best examples of tropical parrots.

Like modernist architecture, landscape architecture of the time was also reserved, abstract and mainly monochromatic with just few shades of green. But those in charge of the renewal obviously saw it as empty and needed to "decorate" a bit. Now a new park features flowers of all colours, chinese and japanese temples and ponds with goldfish. It is simply "too beautiful" for me to show a photo on my page.

After a short wander around Marzahn I quickly saw what happened here and soon left it from the derelict S-bahn station that shows the new problems Marzahn is today facing: it is known as area where unemployment is high and so is the crime rate. Transition from the East to West wasn't easy and cannot be felt on Potsdamer Platz or Unter der Linden. It is places like Marzahn that one has to visit in order to get more real picture, and no new color on balconies can hide all the problems behind.
