ATM's in Berlin..?

by Greggor58

Does anyone have experience using ATM machines in Berlin...simple question would be I suppose are Canadian issued ATM cards linked to banks in Canada? Can I use my Canadian bank issued ATM card in bank machines in Berlin..?
Thanks to anyone that might share they're experience...

i've done it alot of times. No problem. Look for Star or Cirrus logos on the back of your card and on the machines

It's always been an element of suspense wether or not the money will roll out or your card will be rejected. Just in case I usually carry some currency even if I have to pay an exchange rate, just for any emergency, such as last minute transportation to the airport.

We used them in Portugal and Germany without a problem.
Recently had our card read when we used a machine in Toronto though.
Word to the wise, run your thumb over the card slot before you put your card in. If there has been a reader inserted there would normaly be a small metal tab sticking out that they can grab to pull it back out.
I think the best way to be safe would be to use a machine that is inside the bank rather than in a vestibule that is separate. Hopefully the crooks would be less like to try something if the machine is actually in sight of the bank staff.
They drained our bank account pretty quick.

in an emergency you can also make a cash withdrawal on a credit card inside the Bank, just ask for a cash advance, they may want to see your passport, and there will be a fee.
I agree with having a plan B as my card wouldn,t work in Hungary but did everywhere else, perhaps keep a credit card in a separate spot in case of trouble.

Thanks all for your help.....all good advice and GREAT to know that I can probably draw funds on a whim...I have used ATM's outside of Canada but mostly in Mexico and the USA...I have NOT travelled in Europe for quite a few years and I just wasnt certain...Again....Thanks!

Travel Tips for Berlin

Ka De We

by Audrey118

Kaufhaus de Westens it the name of the large upmarket departmental store..it is along Tauentzienstrasse along the Ku'damm.

Locals in short call it Ka De We
It is not a cheap place, but a very nice grand place to look and see. I did buy some optical lenses there - the prices were reatively good to me.

But the star if the departmental store is not the grand mannequins downstairs but the large deli upstairs - claiming to be the largest in the world. I say cheese offered for sampling and they had a special cutter which sliced the cheese so thin and looks like a bloom!!! There are all kinds of fresh produce, top end confectionaries...and of course lots of eateries where everything is open kitchen concept.

by Gaby_Thieme

There is only a small remnand of the ' Iron Curtain - The Wall ' left in Berlin. It is a tourist attraction and a memorial. We went to see it and I took a picture with my husband standing next to it. ( It is only a large picture-poster )

Fort Hahneberg

by alancollins

Fort Hahneberg was built between 1882-1888 and was the last military fort to be built in Germany. It came into being because of the advancement in artillery pieces, which meant the Citadel and the arms industry in the town could be hit by artillery fire. It was thought that any attack on Spandau would come from the south west and the fort was constructed on that route to keep the advancing army at bay. Other forts were planned but it was realised that with the advances in high explosive artillery shells that forts had become obsolete. The fort was used as a hospital during WW2 and after the war it came under soviet influence. The fort was left to fall into disrepair until the Soviets left. Unfortunately this fort is the poor relation of its more famous cousin in the town centre and receives very little in the way of aid to carry out and the repair work that is necessary. The fort is open for visits at weekends and holidays but you have to go on a guided tour which is only in German. The address is Hahnebergweg 50, 13591 Berlin. I caught the S-Bahn to Pichelsberg and then took the M49 bus.

If you are say Bill Gates...

by matcrazy1 about Lösche

This story didn't look very luxary neither outside nor inside. Despite this there was stuff worth millions of euros there: various fur, sheepskin and leather coats. The prizes were fixed but... the saleswoman decided to lower one for us (25%).

We didn't meet any animal rights activists there. Are there any in Berlin? As I know they often protest aggressively in front of these stores against what they believe to be cruelty against animals. Right? I am neither Rockefeller nor Bill Gates (+ I am travel addicted :-) so I did buy nothing there. Among hundreds of clothes Urszula found (she has talent to it) beautiful, long, almost white (dirty white) sheepskin coat which looked like 100 yo. The sheepskin coat Urszula liked so much costed... 2,000 € (first price) and 1,500 € (last price). Sadness :-(. Hmm... should be much less in Poland when made by a furrier.

The S-Bahn

by Sileas

There are different kinds of transportation in Berlin. The S-Bahn belongs to the train network but you can travel with any local transportation ticket. The network is good, and the trains usually go further afield than the underground trains.
