Few questions

by SaschaSER

Guten Tag! :)

Please, if someone can help me, I have few questions:

1. taxi in Berlin - telephone numbers and names of companies that are OK?
2. the pipes that we can see on streets in east Berlin and eastern parts of Germany, they are for what?
3. working hours on December 31st and January 1st and 2nd, a suppose that the most of the shopping molls will be closed?

Thank you!

Re: Few questions

by Turtleshell

1) Google came up with the following two numbers first: 20 20 20 or 26 10 26 from a fixed line within Berlin. Area code is 030.

2) Those date back to times when Berlin was basically one huge building site. The pipes were used to pump the groundwater to a distant reservoir. They are rare now.

3) 31st: shops open noon or perhaps 2pm, 1st and 2nd (Sunday): most shops will be closed. Exceptions are shops at stations and fuel stations.

Shops are open *until* noon not from noon (or 2pm) on, sorry for the confusion.

Thank you for your answers, it will be very helpful. :)
Those pipes don't have any function any more?

Thank you again.

Given Berlin's excellent public transport system I doubt many people here have ever used the taxis - I've never had any need.

As to shopping around the New Year it would be worth checking the main railway station mall. The Hbf makes a big song and dance of the fact that it open early to late 365 days a year - http://www.berlin-hauptbahnhof.de/site/berlin__hauptbahnhof/en/shops/shops.html

1) At the airports or train stations or elsewhere where taxis are waiting for customers you just hop into the first taxi of the queue. If you order a taxi through your hotel desk/concierge just relay on their experiences. But it plays not that a big role which company.

2) ground water management. And they are still used for this - just fewer of them than in the past.

Thank you all for replays!
We are planing on going out in clubs, etc, so we will be returning in hotel late in the evening or early in the morning, so I don't know about night lines, etc. So, taxi is much easier solution. :)

Thanks!

You won't feel the vibe of this city in a taxi.

I will use Taxi this night, 'cause I'll come home in the middle of the morning, in a corresponding condition ;-) and it will be extremely cold here (minus 20 degree Celsius)
here are some numbers for Taxi in Berlin

Travel Tips for Berlin

Sightseeing Bus

by mvtouring

I am a big fan of the hop on/ hop off busses. They give you a good idea of what is where and to orient yourself of the city that you are visiting. The cost of the one that we used were 12 euro for 24 hours. Stops which are not always clearly marked are usually at Kurfurstendamm, KaDeWe, Potsdamer Platz, Checkpoint Charlie, Alexanderplatz, Berliner Dom, Friedrichstrasse, Brandenburger Tor, Hauptbahnhof, Schloss Charlottenburg.

Swimming and other Water Sports

by Kakapo2

The water quality of most lakes and the rivers Spree and Havel is of surprisingly good quality, so it is no problem to cool down there and go for a swim. If I think of our contaminated lakes and rivers in New Zealand, dubbed as a nature paradise… This water has even killed cattle when drinking from it. Well, at least this is a kind of suicide, as dairy cows pollute our waters…

But back to Berlin. Another trend is the growing number of river swimming pools (Uferbad), and clubs along the Spree with beach bars (Strandbar) and deckchairs. We saw quite a lot of these on both sides – up and downstream – of Oberbaumbrücke, including along the Eastside Gallery. A big Strandbar is the Strandbar Mitte opposite Museumsinsel.

The lakes - like Wannsee - are havens for other water sports. I especially love to hire a rowing or pedal boat, and enjoy this mixture of exercise and relaxation.

Huge apartment buildings

by matcrazy1

In most European cities - like in say Paris or Rome - there are districts of almost exclusively old houses (old town) and seperate districts of modern architecture (suburbs). But not in Berlin which was heavily destroyed by air bombings at the end of WWII and partly rebuilt in modern style.

So, don't be surpriced to see quite many huge apartment buildings often put among old tenement houses like for example at the end of Ahornstraße (Schöneberg).

The Tiergarten is a very large...

by DanielF

The Tiergarten is a very large park in the center of the city. The column of the Victory is popularly known as the Angel. You can climb to the view point and feel like the characters in one of the films of Wim Wenders.

T-shirts

by matcrazy1 about Souvenir shops

There were various T-shirts sold in souvenir shops on southern side of Unter den Linden, close to Branderburg Gate. Some of them were with Berlin landmarks like Branderburg Gate, Berlin wall, Berlin flag with a bear etc. T-shirts if you like. Rather expensive area - even almost 20 € per T-shirt.
