What area and hotel advice needed

by spacehopper

Hello,

I am coming to Belin in March and thought about staying in Mitte, someone else suggested the borough of Prenzlauer Berg but didn't say why. Which is the best area for bars and restaurants but within walking distance of all the sites.

I need a hotel, preferable one with character but around the 65€ mark per night for a double with bathroom. Any help would be appreciated.

Best wishes

You could stay where Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg are bordering each other (e.g. near Hackescher Markt or Alexanderplatz). Than you're in walking distance of quite a number of sights. But there is no place where ALL the sites are in walking distance. Berlin is a huge and widespread city. Rather see that the place you'll stay is close to public transport, e.g. a S-Bahn or U-Bahn station.

Mitte

Northern Mitte, around Hackescher Markt, Oranienburger Straße and Torstraße is great for both - bars and restaurants and near the most sights. Hotel for 65Euro in that area is difficult, but if you don't need much service, a room in a hostel with bathroom maybe does it?

Thank you very much for all your suggestions, I have found a nice hotel on the Mitte and Pinzlauer borders.

Best wishes

What was the hotel you found? I'm going there in April and am looking to find a decently priced hotel.

Hello,

It is http://www.alameda.de, it is 80 euros so not as cheap as I was hoping for but it looks really nice. You can also get late booking bargains on www.hotelclub.com.

Good luck and have fun.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Berlin is very tourist friendly city but if in case u have any trouble of any kind, do not hesitate to contact the nearest polie officer. They usually speak English & German and are very helpful even if u ask them simple directions.

Tipping advice

Tipping advice

Service charges are generally added to restaurant and hotel bills in Berlin, making tipping unnecessary. Some of the smaller cafes and bars are excluded from this custom and it is standard practice to round up the bill to the nearest Deutschmark. The cost of service should be clearly stated and visible in brochures or on menus.

What was that?

by matcrazy1

I passed by this structure on my picture located at the corner of Marburgerstraße and Tauentzienstraße (district Schöneberg).

It was quite creative and strange example of small city architecture in my opinion. There was a restaurant called "Schlemmer Pylon" in the bright red, how to say... coach on the ground floor.

There is!Post office open till midnight

by matcrazy1 about Postamter

When I saw Bundespost (German Post) logo at the corner of Joachimstaler Straße and Ku-Damm I went to the post office located nearby to buy postage stamps there. Although it was busy Saturday midday there were no lines (I remember them from... the USA).

Despite the post office was located in the same heart of Berlin it wasn't open non-stop. But I can't complain. I was told that it was the longest operating post office in Berlin.
Opening hours:
Mon - Sat: 8.00 am - midnight,
Sun: 10 am - midnight! Postage stamps - available exclusively at post offices.
I was told that there were some automats selling them located by post boxes in Berlin but I didn't find any. Postage stamps for postcards to:
Europe - 0.40 €
Outside Europe - 1.00 € (they gave me LUFTPOST = air mail labels).

Excellent public transport

by DrexlUK

Berlin has a superb public transport system with clean, frequent trains and buses that always seem to be on time. You can purchase a 'day ticket' for around six Euros which allows you to travel on all trains and buses around Berlin and the surrounding areas (Wannsee etc.) The ticket is valid until 3am the next morning and must be dated in the machines found around the city before being used.
