Is there anything open on Sunday?

by mjfeaster

We will be going to Berlin in late May and I was wondering if all of the touristy things, local restaurants, buses....will be open on Sunday?

Restaurants and museums will be open, buses will run, but less frequently than on weekdays, shops will be closed.

Shops are closed, apart from the ones in bigger train stations.

Museums, other sights, restaurants are open. Less prominent sights are sometimes open only during weekends.

Buses and other local public transport operate. Albeit not with the same dense frequency like during the peak hours of the weekdays. On the other side there is more 24 hrs service on a Sa/Su night (and Fr/Sa) than on weekdays night.

Hi there,
Shopping malls will be closed on Sunday and most of the supermarkets, too. If you need a supermarket on Sunday try the one at Ostbahnhof. For small shops with great clothes, shoes and so on, a lot of shops are open around Simon-Dach-Straße near station Warschauer Straße. There are also great cafes and bars.
It is a vibrant area at the weekends.
Hope you´ll enjoy your stay.

Best wishes from Berlin,

Stine

Travel Tips for Berlin

Great Architecture Around the City-Konzerthaus

by grishaV1

I like all of the interesting buidlings and architecture. You can see the old style buildings and also the new altogether and next to each other. Many buildings look like historic but they were built newly after the wars because of damages. But even so there are some really ugly buildings too, but most I liked. Konzerthaus at Gendarmenmarkt was one of my favorite,it was built in 1821. Its the home of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. I´ve gone twice to concerts at the hall and each time its just a joy. Beautiful building completely, Germans have a great love for music certainly and they maintain this buildings wonderfully. I had visited this area while being shown around the city the first time I came to Berlin, but during language classes often we have a short tour for newcomers who have seen the sites and inevitably we go to Gendarmenmarkt. If you take the U2, you get off at the Stadt Mitte stop. Its a nice area, in Winter they have a Weihnachtsmarkt here which is very nice.

Berliner toiletes

by croisbeauty

Well, I guess it is good to know that you wont have any problem for certain meeds when in Berlin, especially if loaded with lots of beers. Those who are not comfortable to use cafe-bars or restaurants, and many of them have awornings like "this is not public toliete", can use this public toiletes which are very clean and in perfect conditions. As I could see it, the city authorities take care of toiletes and they do it very well.

Forest Walk

by nigelw6443

Although it is easy to find a nice park to walk through in Berlin, just on the outskirts are many forested areas.

Tegel has a very nice forest with two lakes. One lake is closed off to publicas it is a bird sancturay and the other is popular with locals in the summer as it has several beaches and gets quite busy. But the forest itself has many trails through it and is popular with dog owners as they can let the dogs run free.

There is plenty of birdlife to spot and the forestry dept. has placed many bird boxes to the trees. I have spotted several species of bird in here including spotted woodpecker, jay and even buzzard.

On the rare occasion derr may be found here and there are also several families of wild boar.

Ultramodern department store

by nomadig about Galeries Lafayette

Galeries Lafayette, located on busy shopping street Friedrichstrasse in Berlin downtown, is really sweet looking department store. Built with a lots of glass and steel, it sets the store apart from the rest of the department stores built in early 20th century.

The central opening is coated with glass walls, and as it curves like a cigar, you can see the people on the basement restaurant level eating while you are waiting her on the women's level.

Galeries Lafayette is first and foremost a fashion department store. Most of the levels are dedicated to garments for women, men and children; both classic and contemporary styles are available.

The basement has a selection of small restaurants and a delicatessen.

berlin's modern dance scene

by miromi about halle

Even if you don't speak German it would be a shame to miss out on the theater scene. Modern dance is more easily understood and I especially love Halle, an old high school sports gym that was converted into a theater... it's located right next to the Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg and is a great place to check out internationally known modern dance pieces.
