A path to follow
Big and small marks of WWII are all over Berlin. Memorials about the Wall, about the jewish persecution, memorials about all death on WWII... You cannot forget it. The contrast between the "old" and the new Berlin.

Good luck with finding accommodation!
www.booking.com has a good selection of pensions and apartments in Berlin and the reviews there tend to be very accurate. For your dates they have "Apartments Berlin City West" at 495 Euros for the 9 nights which is pretty reasonable and the reviews are generally good.
On my visiit I stayed at Classic Apartments (booked through booking.com) out at Adenhaurplatz which whilst not central was within 20 minutes of almost everywhere by public transport. My apartment was excellent, well-furnished and with a well-equipped kitchen. It was on a quiet side street but with 2 local supermarkets and a laundrette on the street as well as a couple of restaurants.

The history of Berlin is full of destruction and demolition but on the other hand the present is entirely different. There are many beautiful eye catching modern buildings. Usually there are exhibitions of young architects which is a must see for architecture students for inspiration.
Berlin is not say Amsterdam. There were not very many parking lots for bicycles in Berlin's downtowns/centers. Usually they were located either among apartment buildings, and in front of larger department stores or some popular among locals other stores. Some bicycle owners used to lock their bicycles to the fence by the entrance to the underground U-bahn stations or to street-lamps. Surely it is a custom of not only Berliners.
My plan for the morning was to visit one of the typical 1970s neighbourhoods of former East Berlin and I originally headed to Marzahn but couldn't resist the beauty of the residential towers along the Allee der Kosmonauten so I left the S-bahn two stops early. And I didn't regret since high-rise development of the Wohngebiet am Springfuhl is real beauty of its time. I know most people will say it is a terrible mistake done by the former communist government of the GDR but in fact it was the only possible answer to the problem of housing shortage in the context of that time - a model town that followed all principles of the modernist architecture. Housing blocks are accompanied by shopping facilities, schools and kindergardens, cinemas and swimming pools all set in nice composition among the vast green areas. S-bahn offers quick links to the center of Berlin while trams and buses connect smaller residential areas.
Almost all buildings were recently renewed and this was done well, improving the insulation of the buildings, adding solar cells on facades etc but without destroying the original appearance of the buildings.
S-bahn S7, S75 to Springpfuhl
This stretch of Simon-Dach-Strasse has several cafe's and bars. Conmux has both outside sidewalk seating and a good amount of room in the interestingly decorated cafe'. Old sewing machines as tables and old pictures on the walls.
