1 day in Berlin

by amit_s27

Hi,

I will be in Berlin from 21st Nov (friday) evening till 22nd Nov (saturday) evening. Could anyone suggest how to make the best of one night in Berlin (good clubs, bars, etc) and a good budget hotel to stay in? I have been to Berlin before and seen most of the regular tourist attractions, so looking for something with more of a local flavor now..

Thanks!
Amit

Spend your day in the Prenzlauer Berg area, i.e. here

or here

or here

Spend your evening around Helmholtzplatz ("Wohnzimmer", 6 Lettest.), Lychener St. Kollwitzplatz, Oderberger St or at the Kulturbrauerei (see tip). It's all within walking distance.

If you are into slow paced life as well, consider visiting the farmer's market at Kollwitzplatz on your Saturday morning (see tip).
Then you could take the subway to Alexanderplatz and hop on bus 100 to Zoologischer Garten. Catch bus 200 to drive all the way back to Alexanderplatz. It's nice sightseeing tour, just a lot cheaper and without the annoying guide.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Ampelmännchen

by m-joy

In the east of Germany unique traffic signals are used for pedestrians. Those little figures called Ampelmännchen are much more pretty and droll than the pedestrian crossing signals in the west of Germany or in other countries. They are very popular and many Ampelmännchen-souveniers are offered in the tourist-shops.

Spargelzeit!

by sue_stone

We visited Berlin in May which just happened to coincide with the middle of Spargelzeit - Asparagus Season. This was great news for 2 reasons:

1. The Germans are apparently go crazy for asparagus; and
2. I had very recently become obsessed with the stuff!

Spargel (asparagus) was everywhere in Berlin. But not the skinny green type, this was white asparagus, with huge, thick stalks. Everywhere we went there were stalls laden with it for sale.

Outside every restaurant & café there were signs saying 'Spargel!' and special menus devoted to this delicious vegetable. I was in my element!

I managed to eat it once or twice a day during our trip. And yes, it does make my wee smell funny, but I don't mind ; )

Berlin Wall victims memorial

by der_geograf

This was a surprising memorial I found out about while walking to the Reichstag.

It is between the Brandenburger Tor and the Reichstag, and it consists of a fence with white crosses with the names and dates of death of people who died attempting to cross the Berlin Wall.

It is a simple monument, but it's meaning and emotional effects are tremendous.

It is very big

by Igraine about KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens)

This place is huge and expensive. But shopping with your eyes is very cheap ;-).
Would have like to watch some more but my feet were very tired by the time we got here.
It was a lot harder to find despite its name.

They were refurbishing this place at this moment so parts where closed for public.

TIP: In the entry hall are couches! Ideal to rest your feet and watch the other people shopping.
We also saw an elderly Japanese couple taking a short nap there lol. Guess the jetlag hit them hard.

Berlins Oldest?

by nigelw6443 about Leydycke

Leydycke has to be one of Berlins oldest pubs or Kneiper as they say here. I say that because it certainly looks like the oldest. I don't think it's been decorated since opening.

Leydycke specializes in fruit wine and schnappes and the bartender will always welcome you whether you come alone or with a coach party! Casual
