After my passport went missing in Hamburg I had to stay close to the U.S. Consulate in Berlin since their walk-in hours start at 8:30 am. I had been to this suburb (Dahlem) once before in 2005 and had always kept this "hotel" in the back of my mind in case of emergency since it is literally the next door neighbor to the Consulate. This is really more of a 2 -story motel than a hotel. The entire facility has a very faded and tired look about it. The room (70 Euros) was large but the carpet was stained and the toilet had duct-tape around one of the pipes. The property looks and feels like a an old waterside motel on Cape Cod (even though there's no water in sight!). When I arrived late at night (best to call if arriving after 8 pm) I was welcomed by a gorgeous, young lady in a very tight outfit. Her appearance and the general condition of the place made me think that this was a "No-tel" rather than legitimate accomodations. However, I was WRONG in my judgement as you will read further.
Unique Quality: The best feature of this hotel is the highly energetic and personable owner, Irina. She, her 2 pretty daughters and husband work very hard to keep this enterprise functioning 7 days a week year-round. Irina hails from Russia and took over this long-standing business about a year and a half ago after having paid her dues in the hospitality industry. Irina has a heart of gold and a spirit that is infectious. I only hope that she and her family will invest just a little more into the ambience. Just a few bright spashes of color and new carpeting would uplift this place (although the automatic storm shutters are a neat retro feature to retain!). Until such changes are made I would recommend this property for no more than a 2 night stay. It is located especially close to the 'Frei University' campus and is one of the only hotels in the area. With so many reasonable hotels in central Berlin I would be hard pressed to recommend a normal tourist stay here although anyone who likes a relaxed, nice suburban atmosphere will enjoy upscale but low-key dahlem.
