Travel Tips for Berlin

It Happenned at the Wall

by diocletianvs

This fantastic book by Rainer Hildebrandt is a real bestseller (sold in more than 1,200,000 copies) and a must-read for everyone interested to find out what life in Berlin looked like between August 13, 1961 and November 9, 1989.

The book is in fact a catalogue of the "Checkpoint Charlie" museum and features the introduction to the Wall and the background info about its phenomenon. A large part of the book is dedicated to the creativity of East Berliners trying to escape to the West - a black and white photography documenting something that we all took almost as normal until 1989.

Great b/w photographs and descriptions in German, English and French make this 224-page book easy to read but hard to understand.

The book is sold in many bookshops in Berlin, as well as in Tourist Offices. A very good bookshop is "Berlin Story" bookshop at Unter den Linden 40 offering many books in non-German languages.

Come as you are

by Turtleshell

Over the past years, I came across some friendly US Americans eager to leave that (stupid) caricature of the loud, obnoxious American behind. They asked if there was kind of a dress code for the entirety of Berlin.

Rest assured there is not. Personally, I never wear shorts outside my flat, but I have seen people wearing shorts in winter doing some Christmas shopping or whatever at Kurfürstendamm.

Some people dress very sloppy, others are very fashion-conscious, others try to reanimate the 20s, and then there are some who barely seem to wear anything.

And I would never have thought that some colours exist as hair dye.

Just like in London, NYC or S.F., there are so many crazy people, you'll have a hard time standing out in a crowd.

If somebody is gawking at you, he/she probably thinks you're cute.

Zentrum fur spirituelle Entwicklung

by JourneyOf1

Yoga houses are popping up all over Berlin as there is a great movement among 20 and 30 somethings and others also, to study esoteric, spiritualist, and new age ways of life in order to achieve greater harmony.

The house I was introduced into is the Deutsch Akademie fur Traditionelles Yoga at Wartburgstr. 6, 10823 Berlin. The type of yoga offered is Tantra Yoga. Also at this location there are often seminars specializing in self-improvement, women's issues, and relationships. Other types offered are Hatha-Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Bhakti-Yoga, Ayurveda and Kasmir Sivaismus.

This particular house is a combination of living space, meditational rooms for exercise classes, kitchen and bathroom facilities and a storefront. There are regular instructor/leaders who live at the property all the time as well as those members who spend one week of every month living at the house. It's communal living at its spiritual finest. Everyone is very friendly and loving as they strive towards spiritual enlightenment. Just walk in anytime if you are passing by in the neighborhood and get a flyer to know what times they meet.

The little green man

by christine.j about Ampelmaennchengeschaeft

In East Germany the traffic light for pedestrians has shown a little green man walking, in West Germany he has been standing. After the reunification there was most ridiculous quarrel , as the some stubborn paper-shufflers wanted to abolish the East German walking man. A lot of protest arose and the little green man survived. You can buy many souvenirs with him. In the Hackesche Hoefe there is a shop which sells only Ampelmaennchen articles, even gummi bears, only there are no bears, there are Ampelmaennchen. It's a fun store and you can get some nice souvenirs there.

Potsdamer Platz

by seamandrew about Potsdamer Platz

This metropolitan like Center (Sony Center) has various restaurants, shops (crafts, fashion, etc.) , and even a cinema. For a someone who grew just outside New York City (me) it makes me feel somewhat at home! There may have been a club or two in the area. Wear what you wish but keep in mind some restaurants may have dress codes.
