Check Point Charlie Museum
by palma104
Most of the comments made regarding this sight and the musuem
mention there are too many people there to appreciate it.
What if these sights were visited very early in the morning or late
in the evening? Is it still overcrowded then for viewing and is the
line to the musuem still long?

Hi,
I visited Checkpoint Charlie in the early evening, and didn't find it crowded; there was no queue for the museum.
You are welcome to read my tip:

Good luck and enjoy,

I was at Checkpoint Charlie during the day when it was really crowded, but that is all about the madness and posing with actor guards. Even then there were no queues at the museum. I think many people do not bother about it, the majority of tourists just try to get their Hollywood photo with the Russian and American soldier-actors.

You could always go right off the beaten path and visit the Das AlliiertenMuseum (The Allied Museum) on Clayallee. This is a hidden gem, and will definitely not be too crowded. See http://www.alliiertenmuseum.de/
From memory, the original Checkpoint Charlie guard-post is here; the one now standing there now is a replica.

not that crowded, not that big a deal, and frankly not on your top ten list for berlin. better to visit the topography of terror three blocks west and skip this kitchy museum and faux checkpoint.

I pretty much second nicolaitans remarks. Checkpoint Charlie is just a very tacky place, with or without tourists. Here is a detailed link to the above mentioned topography of terror exhibition:

Travel Tips for Berlin
This is probably the only time...
by lillapenguin
This is probably the only time of year that you will see Berling like you've never seen it before. The streets are literally jam packed full of ravers, trying to get near the floats that go by. Every lamppost traffic light had someone with great climbing skills as they try and balance themselves to get a better view. The atmosphere was amazing. Everybody just wanted a good time. The was no apprehension like you find for example at football matches. Everybody was cool.
BELOW: First stop was London where out group met up ready for the journey to Berlin and then out youth hostel a few underground stops away from the Centre (Lisa, Jen, Jen and Alex).
Alte Nationalgalerie

The old masters galerie is situated on the museums iseland. You can easily get it by walk from the center or by S-Bahn or DB from Friedrichstrasse station. The gallery was built in 1866-1876 by Friedrich August Stuelers and last reconstruction works were in 2001. The entrance fee is EUR 8. The biggest part of exhibition is kept by German painters works. But for me it was very interesting to see impressionists hall in the gallery.
Through the Checkpoint Charlie to DDR
by WanderingFinn
It happened in 1987 when I was 19 years old. We made a car tour throughout Europe; in 13 countries with my boyfriend of that time. We wanted to visit DDR and East-Berlin too. It was exciting to drive the "Transit BRD" highways, meant only for western visitors' use. Stopping was allowed only at certain marked places; to avoid contact with the locals.
First to West-Berlin of course. When I was about to hand our passports on the border of West- and East Germany, the frontier guard just said, without taking our passports, "Ah, Finnland, gehen sie".
Spent some days in West-Berlin. Then left the car beside the colourful Berlin wall and walked towards the east. Then, on the border of West and East Berlin our passports were verified and checked four times.
It was a strange experience to see how the western life and joy (Berlin had its 750's anniversary) changed immediately to something weird. Like we'd dived back in time some 50 years. No cars, perhaps one or two Trabants or Wartburgs every now and then. Nobody nowhere. The Polizei seemed to have Wartburgs as their official cars.
The Berliner Dom (church) was great, and a couple of other buildings. Otherwise I don't remember anything worth remembering.
I always remember, when coming back to the west waiting at Checkpoint Charlie, those few American guys near us. They seemed to be serious when they stated to each other "Oh I love to see the stars and stripes again".
Unknown Jewish Berlin
by matcrazy1
Walking Frankentaler Ufer along northern bank of Landwehrkanal I easy noticed this building on my picture. There were many cameras on and around the edifice and two police officers watching. I first thought that it was an office of someone important.
But the building accommodated Jewish community centre and a small synagogue. Both were closed to public when I was there.
HISTORY
There was a huge orthodox synagogue, the center of orthodox Jewish life in Berlin at this place before WWII. Orthodox Jews celebrated the sabbath there from 1913-1938 until members of Hitler's police stormed the building and burnt the torah scrolls. The complex was then confiscated by the Nazi authorities and used as... a garage.
During WWII the synagogue was completely destroyed by bombs but Jewish community decided to rebuild or rather build new buildings which stand till now.
There are also more known Jewish culture centers in Berlin, both open to the public and located nearby:
1. New Synagogue on Oranienstraße, which houses the Centrum Judaicum. There are various expositions open to the public. A large, golden dome is open to the public but exclusively April 1 - September 30.
2. The Jewish Museum - the most significant example of contemporary architecture in Berlin, hmm... I only drove along the building and liked it.
Next time I am going to visit both Jewish centers.
Address:
Fraenkelufer 10
10999 Berlin-Kreuzberg
Directions:
U-bahn: Kottbusser Tor (U1, U15). From the station walk southwards Kottbuser Straße and turn left to Fraenkelufer before the bridge over Landwehrkanal. Walk along the canal, the synagogue on the right.
Havana nights
by nigelw6443 about QBAR
A great bar to have a bite to eat or to enjoy some lively music and a few Caipi's. This place stays open real late and not only are the Caipi's good but one of the best Mojito's in the city too! Casual
