graue Busse - T4 memorial - photos

by JHR

I am not going to make it to Berlin this year. But can someone please confirm something I saw in a newspaper report: that a concrete Grey Bus now stands as an adjunct to the Aktion T4 memorial on Tiergartenstrasse near the Berliner Philharmonic building. What does it look like? If someone on a visit could post a photo, I'd be very grateful. I made a pilgrimage to the T4 memorial last year, making some of gesture of solidarity, as the parent of someone with a disability.

Also, does the bus actually bear the inscription "Wohin bringt ihr uns?"? As a Doors fan, I'm reminded of the line in The End "Driver, where you takin' us?". Although Jim Morrison's bus was blue...

I'm also reminded that there is a Jim Morrison/Nico connection - "Blood is the rose of mysterious union" - and that you will find a previous discussion in this forum about the location of Nico's grave.

But enough! I am tired and emotional, and rambling. Just to say, any photos posted would be much appreciated...

Yes, that's correct. I don't have a picture, but found some on the net:

Yes, it does, the bus consists of two halves whith a gap in the middle, and when you are standing in the middle of the two halves, there's indeed the inscription.
It looks like this (scroll down a bit).

While the picture was taken in Ravensburg, it's actually the same bus, since the bus is "on tour" so to speak.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Treptower Park sounds...

by Pegasus74

Treptower Park sounds interesting in the guide and I tried to cover that as well. It's where the largest Soviet Monument erects, a grave site for thousands of Soviet soldiers who died in the war against Hitler. On top of the tomb at the far end of the park is a huge statue of a valiant, square-jawed Soviet soldier, clasping a child in one arm, and with the other smashing a swastika.

I hope this much of writings has not already bored you. But really Berlin, the capital of unified Germany, offers many interesting sites - historical and modern. Hundreds of cranes amid them, almost nowhere will stay the same. You oughtta be on your way there soon to see it rejuvenate.

Staring, Observing, Whatever you want to call it

by JourneyOf1

I have yet to meet another German who does not openly look at something or someone they want to observe until they are content they have seen all they wished to. So don't be surprised if you get looked or stared at openly, its not aggression (in most cases), its just curiousity.

Especially if you are "unique" for the area, not visibly indigenous, meaning if you have darker skin than average. Again, this is not meant to be offensive to anyone but its the plain truth. Berlin is very multicultural and you see people from all over the world, yet still there is curiousity and frank appraisals. Don't let it bother you. I am quite used to it and do it myself I confess. People are so very interesting, aren't they?

Chilling

by Igraine

Gedenkstätte und Museum Sachsenhausen, the former KL Sachsenhausen . A concentrationkamp near Oranienburg. A very chilling place certainly when i was there when it had realy frozen. Its a big open space surrounded by fences. So not much left to look at but knowing the stories from tv and my studies etc makes you feel the atmosphere and one can´t even start to imagine how it must have been.
There is though an exhibition in one of the old baracks. The glas container filled with hair certainly made my hairs rise. A must see for everyone who wants to know about WW2.

The biggest department store in Europe

by Gillianina about KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens)

Established in 1907, is now the largest department store on the European mainland, with around 60.000 square meters of shop floor. With a grandiose abundance of goods on eight floors and excellent service, the store is synonymous with up-market shopping. A particular attraction for both Berliners and visitors from all over the world is the legendary delicatessen floor. It is a mecca for gourmets and the largest delicatessen department in Euope. Exhibitions, fashion shows and signings help KaDeWe to combine shopping and culture in a unique way. An awful lot!!!

Mitte

by yellowstar about Mitte

The newest trend for Bars in Mitte is to offer happy hours for cocktails. no matter if you go out in the week or on friday or saturday, there is always happy hour!!! (sounds like a dream, doesn't it)
So, if you look for places to drink quitely some cocktails or if you just looking for places to get in mood for dancing later somewhere else this is definitely the right spot to go to! Usually you don't have a dress code, but it is totally depending on the bar you are walking in.
