Wedding Locations in Berlin

by asavet63

Our Nephew is getting married in May 2011 and we are looking for a location for a small wedding reception. I think the attendance will be around 3o, so the location should not be to large. They want a bufet meal with room for dancing. They also have a limited budget, so not too expensive.

I would appreciate help from anyone with an idea.

Restaurant Nolle, under the arches at Banhof Friedrichstrasse, caught my professional eye on my last visit as being set-up for party-type events and so might be worth having a look at at. I don't know whether they have a dance floor but it is quite an impressive set-up. Here's the website: http://www.antikmarkt-berlin.de/Restaurant_Nolle.108.0.html?&L=1

Travel Tips for Berlin

The falling wall

by solopes

The Berlin that I knew was the split city, a few months after the falling of the wall and before the unification. My kids enthusiastically joined the crowds hitting the remaining panels of the wall, without any idea about the meaning of that gesture.

Now they know.

It was important to be there then, to see the differences separating both worlds, and to witness history happening.

Now I need to visit Berlin - there's a whole city to visit, and to compare with those small but still vivid memories.

Berlin is a modern, lively and young city. It has a big (war) history but looks very much to the future. That's why you see buildings appear and disappear all the time in Berlin. It's one big building site. Symbols of the city are the Brandenburger Tower, the Berlin Wall and other historical places. But also the Loveparade, Herta BSC, cosy little shops and the multicultural population make this city a touristic centre with lots of trumps. http://www.berlin.de

What a vehicle!

by matcrazy1

Walking around Berlin on Saturday morning and early afternoon I met many postmen and postwomen who used different vehicles to deliver post. They (the vehicles :-) were always painted in bright yellow with a logo of Deutche Post added. Saturday seemed to be a very busy day for Berlin post office staff.

Soviet Memorial

by diocletianvs

Causalties of the Soviet Army in the WWII battle for Berlin were huge, and so is this monument commemorating them that occupies the central area of the Treptower Park. Some 5,000 Soviet soldier are buried here.

The monument is a typical Soviet - Stalinist piece of gigantism and features statue of the Motherland (represented as a grieving woman) and statues of Soviet soldiers flanked by huge triangles (made of red granite Nazis bought from Sweden for their never finished projects in Berlin). From this point there is a broad view of the main monument of the Soviet Soldier saving a child and fighting a Swastika, placed on top of a huge hill. The paths leading there are decorated by some reliefs showing the scenes from the war and many Stalin's words displayed in Russian on the one side and in German on the other side.

The monument is not as crowded as it used to be in the GDR time when it was the must-stop of organized bus tours but it is kept in almost perfect shape and is worth visiting if for nothing else then for its size and monumentality. I stopped here for a while and tried to think about the Soviet army losing so many soldiers here and it made understanding the irrational post-war German and especially Berlin history a little bit easier.
