Which museum?

by shropshiregirl

Hi, if you had time only to visit one of these three museums which would you choose?
Deutsche Guggenheim?
Hamburger Bahnhof?
Neue Nationalgallerie?

Thank you!

Re: Which museum?

1. Hamburger Bahnhof
2. Neue Nationalgalerie
3. Deutsche Guggenheim

Re: Which museum?

Thanks. Yes, I thought Hamburger Bahnhof might come first, but why did you put them into this order?

Re: Which museum?

Hamburger Bahnhof or Neue Nationalgalerie, depending on the current exhibition(s).

Deutsche Guggenheim is basically only one room with an admission fee that really is on the steep side. You can not compare Deutsche Guggenheim to those places in New York City or Bilbao.
On one day admission is free, and sometimes they provide "lunch lectures" which could be fun. Still, I wouldn't rank Deutsche Guggenheim high in my book.

Have you considered visiting the Martin Gropius Bau?

Sounds the Guggenheim is not such a good idea . HB and NNG firm favourites , but just checked your link to the Gropius. Looks interesting, too, especially the tropics exhibition. Thanks for the tip!
It would be so good to live in Berlin and do the lot!

Depends on the exhibition but in general Neue Nationalgalerie would come first, then Hamburger Bahnhof. Martin-Gropius-Bau is a bit more expensive than the two, but in general very good exhibitions (not really comparable to the other two). Guggenheim, as said is relatively small (maximum 1h) but good exhibitions - if you're here on monday, you can visit it for free (when many other museums are closed).

<<>> If you have a short stay in Berlin and you travel by train, Hamburger Bahnhof is the best choice, because it is located near our beautiful new Central station (and it is the only attraction near this building)
As mentioned by our friends before, check out which exhibitions are actual in Neue Nationalgallerie etc

Neue Nationalgalerie just has no special exhibition at the moment...

Re: Which museum?

You are right, there are so many interesting museums in Berlin...
I think the choice between the Neue Nationalgallerie and the Hamburger Bahnhof really depends on the particular artists ehibiting there at the moment: both these museums have changing exhibitions. I recently visited both, saw an interesting photography exhibitions at the Neue Nationalgallerie (Sugimoto)and an interesting multi-media exhibition of a Turkish artist in the Hamburger Bahnhof.
You can check my tips about these 2 museums to see some photos.
Enjoy!

For photography exhibitions my clear favourite is C|O Berlin:

Travel Tips for Berlin

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE
At FriederichStrasse 200 you have a date with History. This border point between the several parts of the city has been the classical spy-exchanging point for many years, but now is just another tourist highlight. Interesting Museum just round the corner.
The main function of the checkpoint was to register and inform members of the Western Military Forces before entering East Berlin. Foreign tourists were also informed but not checked in the West. The German authorities in West and East Berlin were not allowed to check any members of the Allied Military Forces in Berlin and in Germany. Checkpoint Charlie was removed on June 22, 1990. The former Allied guardhouses are now located in the Allied Museum. A copy of the American guardhouse was erected on the original place on August 13, 2000 (see photo).

Berlin Public Art

by William1982

Berlin is a celebration of public art. You'll find sculptures, monuments and the plain bizarre dotted throughout the city, and usually when you least expect it. Notable inclusions are the coloured bears which dot the city, and are Berlin's emblem. This piece of public art is a monument of Socialist writers Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, not surpisingly located in the former Eastern part of the city. They are in a public park, not far from museum island and Berlin Cathedral.

The other side of Berlin

by Alternative

The area of Prenzlauer Berg is often left undiscovered by tourists as well as by people living in Berlin. This part of former-East Berlin has a completely different feel to it, more of an openess. People are who they want to be, whether that means being the normal person from nextdoor, or the guy with dreadlocks hanging around the street. I love going to U Eberswalder Straße and walking around the area. There are some really nice second hand stores and other alternative fashion shops. On Saturdays there's a small but really nice open market. Just walk down Knaackstraße and you'll eventually run into.

Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg

by Nelie

In Bergmann Strasse you find all kind of shops. You can buy hip and trendy clothes and shoes, records and cds, groceries, papeteries.... And there are also many antiques shops. Depends on what you buy.

by nigelw6443 about The Green Door

Look out for a bar along Winterfieldstr. with a green door? Behind the green door is a very intimate cocktail bar, styled in that classic, trendy 70’s retro feel. This bar prides itself on truly exotic cocktails and offers an enormous and impressive choice. Some of the cocktails are on the rather small side though! Casual
