Westin Grand Hotel Berlin: Luxury Accomodation off Unter den Linden    Check Rates

  • Grand Staircase at the Westin - Berlin
    Grand Staircase at the Westin

What impressed me most at the Westin Grand Berlin was the consistently professional, engaging and helpful service I received from every single member of the staff who I encountered during my stay. From the front desk check-in clerks to the concierge to the cleaning staff: every encounter was pleasant and made me feel welcome. (Sometime hotels seem to forget that they should aspire to make their guests feel at home.)

The Westin Grand is in the center of one of the most interesting and important neighborhoods of Berlin. It is just off Unter den Linden, its entrance facing another of Berlin's most famous boulevards, Friedrichstrasse. The Gendarmenmarkt, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Museum Island are all just a few minutes' walk away.

The hotel was designed and built in the last days of the DDR. I was told that the grand staircase in the lobby is a copy of one which featured in the original Adlon Hotel nearby. Admittedly, the interior design of the Westin is not everyone's idea of good taste. It could even be called vulgar. (IMHO, maybe a little too Alexis Carrington?)

Oh but I had fun. Every day I would take the elevator from the fourth floor - where my room was - down to the first, just so that I could make an impressive descent down into the lobby below.

Yes, this is quite an expensive hotel. But when I stayed there in November 2004 I had an incredible rate (which I found through priceline.) $61 a night - which is less than many a midwestern motel.

Hotel Seehof Berlin: French Rococco in Berlin    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The plain vanilla exterior gives little indication of what lies within. Located practically across from the Berlin Exhibition grounds, nestled at a city lake, the Seehof is a gourmet's treat.

Fruitwood panelling, chandeliers and mirrors suggest a strong French influence. The covered plates that come out of the kitchen confirm that a master chef de cuisine is at work here. Excellent food at reasonable prices. The wine list is extensive - the desserts are mildly spectacular.

WIth marbled bathrooms and Regency decor the bedrooms, while not large, are certainly comfortable. Overall service is laid-back.

The pool and solarium feel like a glass-enclosed extension of the lake outside. On fine days, a lake terrace dining room is the perfect location for a quietly elegant outdoor lunch.

Overall, the Seehof feels more like a country manor than a hotel near the heart of a metropolis. For that reason it books quickly at Berlin exhibit times.

    Ibis Berlin Reinickendorf

If possible, when travelling I prefer the hotels of the Accor chain, because quality is guaranteed and prices are reasonable. This time it was Ibis Berlin Reinickendorf. It's not in the very center of Berlin, but not in the outskirts either. The underground (U-Bahn) station Residentzstrasse is very close, maximum 5-min. walk, so you can easily get to the center.

The hotel is very close to Tegel Airport.

The hotel is clean, not expensive, the staff is very friendly.

    PARK PLAZA HOTEL: Good sleeping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Park Plaza is a good hotel, not too expensive with breakfast included.
It is a bit out of town but with the public transport the city center can be reached in about 10 minutes. The U bahn is just around the corner.
When coming by car, a close by parking is available.

    Good bed and excellent breakfast.
Rooms are comfortable, with all the necessary facilities.

This hotel is described as a three-star establishment but really it's not far above hostel standards. Rooms are clean, beds are comfortable but basic is the word best used to describe most things here. The rooms are en-suite but the showers are miniscule and no comlementary toiletries are supplied. There is internet access in the foyer but just one which meant an inevitable wait. Location is good for Schloss Charlottenburg and Deutsche Oper but everything else requires a bus or an U-bahn ride. It's way too far out to be practical and especially in Winter, leaving in the evening to go back into the centre is a chilly, unattractive prospect. If I had paid the regular room rate here I would no doubt have felt I got what I'd paid for but as I had paid a small fortune ( via the person who organised the trip ) I was very dissatisfied indeed. To make matters worse we were booked in here for dinner as well and suffered two nights of inedible and in some cases almost unrecognisable food before we gave up on it.
Nonetheless, this is a very cheap place to stay and if you are prepared for the endless travel in and out of the city then it's worth considering.

Despite the inedible slop we were served up for so-called dinner, the breakfast buffet here is very good indeed. It costs EUR13 per person on top of the room rate but for what you get it's good value. Hot and cold food with plenty of fruit, yogurt etc and an endless supply of good hot coffee.

Green Eggs & Ham: Cosy very friendly hostel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The rooms are big, with super high cielings, big windows, walls painted in an earthbrown/beige/orange give the room a cosy friendly look.

You live in one room of a beautiful "normal" 3 room flat, share bathroom and kitchen with the other guests.
Very good breakfast in the bistro downstairs, very friendly guys run the place.

Circus - The Hostel: A good place to stay

  • I chose the Circus because of its great rate but it offered much more and I enjoyed my stay.
Can't remember the exact rate for a dorm room, 15 Euros I think. It's run very efficiently by a group of young people who come from various countries but have lived in Berlin long enough to know the szene and everything.
I got good advice on arrival as to where to park the car safely for a few days, a big plus right there!
The next best thing is that there's no curfew.

The staff is very helpful with maps and directions to what's not to be missed. They were most useful in making Hostel reservations for me at my next destination. They'll make sure you have a place to go to, even if it takes a few phone calls.

There's a sort of kitchen area but I didn't use it. I prefer going out to eat when I can, it's a downer to watch everyone eating their spaguetti alone and somewhat morosely. The Circus will tell you of a great little café next door (Anna's or something) where they serve a good breakfast. Do go in there, even at night, it's a great place to meet people.

Dorms are mixed and everything was fine.
Internet station in the lobby. You can buy snacks and beer from the reception and everybody smokes. I only saw one ashtray though so be quick to grab it when you're starting a session on the Net.

Great location, near Torstrasse, which has a lot of cultural activities going on, especially at night. There's a great repertory cinema on Torstr., within walking distance of the Circus (name to follow.)
Got it! Nickelodeon * Kino, Torstrasse 216, Berlin-Mitte.

The building on the pic is the People's Theater Association, apparently created by the Socialists between the two world wars. It was popular with directors, actors, personalities, and people in general. It's one way to find your way back to the Circus easily, as it's just across the street.

    Hotel Boerse: Great, central location
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It could certainly use some remodelling to bring the rooms into the current decade, but looks can be deceiving. Hotel Boerse has an excellent staff that goes out of its way to please its guests. The staff was very helpful with tips and information on how to find things in the area, and very knowledgeable about Berlin. Clean rooms, large windows, private bathrooms, TV, clock/radio, cabinets for luggage storage, a lift . . . pretty much everything you needed. Breakfast was excellent, although the dining room seemed small, so if you go during peak season you may have a small wait for a place to sit.

I would recommend it highly--our room didn't look the best in the world, but for price and location it was totally worth it.

It is located on Kurfuerstendamm in Charlottenburg, which is a street that has some of everything for everyone. It is also about half a block from the Uhlandstrasse U-Bahn station. It is 3 blocks away from an internet cafe. Also close to the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedaechtnis-Kirche.

For anyone who can't live without an Americanized meal, it is next to a McDonald's.

    Propeller Island City Lodge: Funky
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hotel was brought to my attention by robertgaz . So Robert, I hope you come and check out this place yourself one day :)

If you're looking to stay in some extraordinary place, stay at the Propeller Lodge. The rooms are individually designed. E.g. there's a mirror room or a room completely in orange. Not quite sure what a Feng Shui Master would have to say...

I didn't stay here myself though
