You mean 24th May?

It was the 60th anniversary of "The Federal Republic of Germany".

Not Germany, but the Federal Republik of Germany.
60 years ago the Grundgesetz (Basic Law / Constitution) took effect.

a few "German birthdays"
German Empire
18. Jan 1871 proclamation in Versailles

Weimar Republic
9. Nov. 1918 November revolution
11. Aug. 1919 proclamation of the constitution

Third Reich
23. March 1933 Enabling Act of 1933

Federal Republic of Germany
23. May 1949 proclamation of the German Basic Law (as new constitution)

and that we do not run of reasons to celebrate:
9. Nov. 1989 fall of the Wall

The Holy Roman Empire (911-1806) is not seen as a national state in the modern sense. Thus Germany as a national state is really just 140 years old. The HRE included also till its end the today countries of: Austria, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein.

Oops. No celebrations that day, and for some quite good reason. The fall of the wall is celebrated on Oct 3rd, German Unity Day.

... will still be celebrated this year with a "Festival of Freedom" from 7.-9. Nov. 2009. In a rather big way.

I was little surprized about that celebration also. They had seen some adds. They come back in two days,I will ask them if there was that celebration or not.
At least they had been at some concert. My father was so excaited to tell how he fly in the balloon.Or what what it is in English.I think you´ll understand anyway ;)

Gendarmenmarkt ~ Statue of Friedrich Schiller

by Audrey118

The Gendarmenmarkt is probably one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

It was created at the end of the 17th century as a market place, the Linden Markt.

The current name is derived from the Regiment Gens d'Armes who had their stables here from 1736 to 1773. From 1777, the square was redeveloped after plans by Georg Christian Unger.

The centre of the square has a statue Friedrich Schiller, a famous German poet.

After the WW II, for a respect of existence, there are yellow metal plates , hammered to the ground. Those metal plates are in front of the houses on which Hebrews lived in and taken away to the concentration camps. You can see those people s name, birth date, date of death and name of the camp..
sad but a kind respect to keep the memory alive.

Old houses along Landwehrkanal

by matcrazy1

The main canal of Berlin (Landwehrkanal) crosses district of Kreuzburg. There were metal fences, walking pathways and narrow (as for Berlin) one-way (unique in Berlin) streets along its banks. Walking along Frankentaler Ufer I enjoyed my eyes with a view over beautiful old buidings standing there.

An evening with Michael Stipe and Co

by Bigs about R.E.M. Concert Waldbuehne

The Waldbuehne is a very special place for such a great evening.... It´s kind of a huge amphitheatre which matches 22.000 people.

I enjoyed it very much, even when the weather was lousy. R.E.M. played 2 hours, mixed with a lot of funny stories by Michael Stipe. A rain cape has been very useful :)
