Christmas in Berlin

by Hellfirejen

Hi,

Me and my other half are coming to Berlin from 23. to 27. December. Can anyone suggest any Christmas activities that may be going on and worth a look. Or anywhere else that is a must see? I've travelled the bottom half of Germany a fair bit, but have yet to venture to the North and am quite looking forward to it!

Also, if you could suggest a reasonable priced hotel thats pretty central, that would be great!

Thanks for your help!

Jen

Best time to see Berlin is actually summer ... but there you go. ;-) I for one don't like Christmas-Markets too much, but what else is there to do, as far as Christmas activities are concerned? One halfway nice market is the one inside Kulturbrauerei (Dean wareham, the former Galaxie 500/Luna-Luna frontman apparently liked it if that helps ;-) ), and the following two pensions are a walking distance away:

The first is (generally speaking) better located, the second one is situated in a more quiet street.

As for concerts and other "events", I'd suggest to buy a copy of either Zitty or Tip, the two listing magazines - if you can read a little German, that is.

A reasonably priced hotel would be The Circus, of which a brief review can be found here:

i stayed at the circus and it was fantastic. there's a really great walking tour in berlin called 'free walking tours berlin' or something to that effect. 3 hours long but well worth it, the guides are fantastic. you can do the whole day tour as well at a cost, it's roughly 6-8 hours from memory.

We went to Berlin for a few days last Xmas and it's lovely! Plenty of markets to wander around and loads of food to eat.

We've been to Berlin twice and stayed at the Hotel Angleterre both times. It's reasonably priced, clean and very quiet after around 10pm. There is a UBahn stop almost right outside and Checkpoint Charlie is 2 minutes walk away. There's a decent cafe/coffee shop opposite and a newsagent nextdoor which sells the train tickets you will need to get around. Recommended.

Travel Tips for Berlin

TV Tower

by bugulma

TV Tower is situated on Alexanderplatz, the former market square that was renamed after visit of Russian Tsar Alexander I to the Prussian King Wilhelm III. Tower was built in 1969-1972 and has 365 meters high.

Tipping is quite hard to...

by Jschukal

Tipping is quite hard to follow. It's supposedly included in the price of the meals but you can add extra to it. There is a huge differance in opinion depending on who you speak to about what you should tip. Being American, I felt it was very cheap for me to tip 10%, but it is considered very generous there. So do what you think is right. The dollar was very strong so it's easy to add a nice tip.

I think of you each day

I love you so much

More and more everyday

When you wake each morning

Your smile is all I see

My heart is filled with joy

You mean so much to me

You fill my days with love

And feelings I can’t explain

I hope you feel my heart

And know I’ll never be the same

The day I knew you were true

..I promised to do the best I could

To always make you happy

..My heart is yours forever

New Shopping Centre

by alancollins about Alexa

The Alexa Shopping Centre opened its doors on the 12th September 2007. It contains 175 shops which mainly sell clothes, though it does have a huge electrical shop which is spread out over 4 floors and there is also a food court. The outside has been described as ugly though the inside looks light and airy.

Berlin Nightlife in general

by miromi about wild wild wild

Everyone is always ***ing that the nightlife isn't as good as it used to be, and perhaps it may be true, as the clubs get chic and less gritty and the city and times change. Yeah so what, every place is like that. I still find the club and music scene excellent, supported by a huge population of university students and jobless musciians on the dole. Berlin is world famous for techno but you can find great hip hop, house, and drum and bass here. It is also one of the cities that every band performs on tour.

zitty http://www.zitty.de has the most credibility, but be warned--it comes huge and fat! the articles are pretty good, too bad there's no porn
tip is more colorful and fluffier, and they don't list some of the more interesting and gritty events at places like squats. but if you don't speak german and are in town for a week, it's ok
did you know that flyer started in Berlin? http://www.flyer.de it's a lot slicker and more well-done than the new york version of flyer. handy because it can fit in your buttpocket!
nightlines? is an excellent flyer-sized little booklet that comes out every season and has a map of the nightline trains and buses that run between 1am-4 or 5am. SOOOOO handy. don't forget to pick up a copy if you're going dancing. also includes bus schedules and club addresses arranged according to U or S bahn line
thankfully there aren't any dresscodes at any good Berlinese clubs.
