Does the job nicely

The hotel sits in Charlottensburg. It is ideally located near a whole sea of restaurants (around Savignyplatz), down the road from Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche and conveniently close to Bahnof Zoo (where the buses 100 & 200 run from and to).

The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The rooms were clean and comfortable although the bathroom was rather small bordering on claustrophobic and the hairdryer was useless!

The mini bar was well stocked and reasonably priced and breakfast was simple but adequate.

The hotel has travel cards to buy and free maps and information.

Pleasant hotel

Location is good - only a 5 minute walk to the Zoo S and U bahn stations and the starting point for the X9 and 109 buses to Tegel. The trip to Tegel on the X9 bus is about 15 minutes while the 109 takes about 20 minutes. The 100 and 200 buses that run east-west through Berlin start and end here.

Rooms facing the back of the hotel are very quiet whereas the ones at the front face a noisy, busy street. We had a problem with the air conditioning in our room and had to keep the small window open. Luckily, our room was in the back, it was September and the weather was cool.

The room was well decorated and clean but very small for a four star hotel. The closet was also very small and hard to use. The condition of the hotel was very good.

The breakfast buffet was excellent with a good selection of items. Although the Excelsior has a restaurant, we found a number of more interesting ones in the area behind the hotel around Savigny platz.

Most residents appeared to be business or independent travelers. Only one small tour group was observed. Staff was very helpful at a very early checkout and brought us juice and coffee from the closed breakfast room.

Although we had no serious problems at the hotel, we would choose a different hotel next time. We only stayed at the hotel for 2 days and could live with the small room. A longer stay would be less pleasant and very cramped.

Unique Quality: Close to Tegel express bus station

Excellent Hotel in Berlin

We stayed for five nights in this hotel from 27th Dec 2004 until 1st January 2005. I booked a double room on the internet after seeing photographs.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for accommodation in Berlin. The location was first class - just 3-5 minutes walk from the Zoo station - the whole city was within easy reach. Facilities were excellent - the room small but adequate - private bathroom with bath and shower - very clean. The beds were extremely comfortable - with quality bed linen. We had a room at the back and it was very quiet - although on a main road it was also quiet at the front.

The restaurant served very good food - fairly priced - and with excellent staff.

There is also a bar in the reception area, which was very comfortable and reasonably priced.

Unique Quality: Overall this is a very good hotel - and the breakfast (which was included in the price) was outstanding. Whatever your taste - there was something for everyone. It would take too long to list everything on the buffet menu - but believe me - whatever your taste you would be adequately served. From fruit, to cooked English breakfast, to muesli, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, croissants (all kinds) - the list was endless - excellently presented.

The only thing that marred our stay was the fact that the hotel had a private dinner dance on New Year's Eve - the restaurant had also been fully booked. We did feel a little put out that no one had informed us of this, so that we could have made other arrangements for dinner (we had dined in the hotel restaurant each night of our stay).

Overall an excellent hotel - and we will definately stay again when in Berlin.
