Things to do and see.
by Jayarep
Hi!
My wife and I are going to be in Berlin for 7 days later this year. Can you tell me the places to visit.I have read about Berlin in The Lonely Planet"but would to go to the pick of the places. Also is it possible to do day day trips from Berlin.Where can we eat local food.Since we are going to be there in the last week of October, what would the weather be like.Does it rain at that time of the year.
Cheers.

One of the most interesting places we visited in Berlin was the Stasi Museum. http://www.stasimuseum.de/en/enindex.htm, based in the former secret police headquarters. We walked around looking at all the strange surveillance gadgets, and 1960s-style offices, then stopped for a coffee in the former staff room, where a DVD about the activities of the Stasi, narrated by Roger Moore, was playing. I think the atmosphere was helped by the fact that it was snowing outside (it was December). Very bizarre.
Obviously you must visit Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the Museum Insel as well, to name just a few.

I visited Berlin in 2002 and enjoyed it very much. Of course, it is a large city where you can find many museums and local food restaurants. But for History lovers, Berlin is a must. There you can visit the remains of the wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the wall museum, the monument to the soviet soldier, the topography of the terror exibition, the monument to the victms of the holocaust, things like that.

>>>Does it rain at that time of the year<<< It Never Rains in Southern California as Albert Hammond sings, but in Middle Europe in every season there can be showers or pouring rain

For a day trip from Berlin, Potsdam and the Sans Souci Palace complex should be well worth the trip. Haven't been there since the reunification, but it was quite interesting when the East German government was running the place. I'm sure the availability of funds for upkeep and restoration since then have made a big difference.

I would definitely recommend the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Very harrowing certainly but worth seeing. I went in expecting to spend maybe an hour or so and stayed there for about five. Here is the website

Although it is a few years since I visited, I found Schlogl's restaurant at Karl-Liebnecht-Strasse 9, 10178 Berlin Mitte very good and not expensive, serving local food. Website here

Hope this assists,

Travel Tips for Berlin
Berlin is a Beautiful City...
by coceng
Berlin is a beautiful city with many great architectures & very fine artworks...
Everywhere you look in Berlin, there would be somthing that could excites you. Well, according to me, I can't talk for other people.
If you are in the right area, you might be thinking that Berlin should be the world capital. It welcomes you with an open arm but depends on how you carry yourself in this city.
New Architecture -- Paul Löbe Haus
by yooperprof
Germany has built a new "Government Quarter that spans the Spree, and whose goal it is to help bridge the distance that still exists between East and West Berlin, and between East and West Germany.
This part of the governmental complex houses some of the offices of the Bundestag. It was designed by the Berlin-based firm of Stephan Braunfel. The Paul Löbe Haus is part of a larger "axis" of governmental structures that makes up part of a grand scheme, the "Bande des Bundes," or ribbon of government. Accordingly, twin pedestrian bridges span the Spree, forming a connection with the Marie Elizabeth Lüders Haus.
The Spandau Citadel
by alancollins
The Spandau Citadel is one of the best preserved Renaissance fortresses in Germany and gives an impression of how people in the 16th century tried to defend themselves against their enemies, it is also the oldest remaining structure in Berlin. The oldest part of the fortification is the Juliusturm (Julius Tower) which dates back to 1160 and served as a keep. For many years it also served as a prison for prisoners of state. The tower also served as home to 120,000,000 gold marks, stored in 1,200 boxes and was paid to Germany by the French as reparations from the war of 1870/1. Barracks on the northern side of the site were used during the 1930’s for chemical weapons research. The citadel is surrounded by a moat and stands at the confluence of the Spree and Havel rivers. Today it is used for cultural events and serves as a winter home for 10,000 bats. The Citadel is open Tues-Fri 9am-5pm; Sat-Sun 10am-5pm and costs 2.5E for adults & 1.5E for children. It is located at Am Juliusturm and the closest station is U-Bahn: Zitadelle.
Renovated and colorful
by matcrazy1
When I wanted to visit Branderburg Gate and Reichstag first I had to find a parking place. After driving around a few minutes I managed to park my car at Schadowstraße. At the northern end of this street I noticed this renovated and pretty building on my picture. It housed "Presse- und Informationsamt der Bundesregierung" that was Press and Information Center of German Federal Government, right? :-)
By the way this district is still under renovation and houses a lot of federal institutons and a few embassies (including Polish and American).
Berlin Bar CLUB DER VISIONAERE
by Dimi1 about ... for Day and Nightdreamers
There in Berlin Kreuzberg in a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a drink and to meet the right people is and was always a pleasure. In summertime you can enjoy a cool drink at the nearby cannel and when it's getting a bit chilly just go in and chill out with relaxing music by a dance on the floor with a local beauty or just watch the night go by through the beautiful scenery out of a window or just have the next drink at the beautiful cocktail bar there ... nice ! Enjoy !!! Just be yourself !
