Brewers Berlin Walking Tour
by clmbsb
On Sunday 10th October we went on the 4 hour tour offered by Brewers. It was lead by a American guy called Preston who was very informative and certainly knew his stuff. We visited all the major sights and was told various pieces of informtion about that sight. There was plenty of time for photos etc and we always had the opportunity to ask questions about anything. Preston also gave tips on how to get the most out of Berlin once the tour was over. Cost €10 per person and would definitely recommend anybody to do this tour.
Museum Island -- Bodemuseum
by yooperprof
The Bodemuseum is at the far northern tip of the Museuminsel. It was designed with the assistance of the director of Berlin's state museums at the time, Wilhelm van Bode - from whom it currently derives its name. (When the museum was first opened in 1904, it was called the Kaiser Friedrich Museum and housed an eclectic mix of collectibles and knickknacks.)
The Bodemuseum will be the last museum on Museuminsel to be renovated, with re-opening currently scheduled for sometime around 2008. The museum will continue to have an interesting mix of collections: Byzantine Art, coins and medallions, and classical European sculpture from Donatello to Canova.
I'm sure that the politics, financing, and history of Berlin's museums would make for a fascinating book!
A very special sight-seeing tour
by christine.j
The Berlin Halfmarathon is a very special sight-seeing tour. We started running near the cathedral, went through the Brandenburger Gate after one or two km and then passed many more of the sights of Berlin. Running through the gate still brought tears in my eyes, thinking about how tightly closed it was 21 years ago, I suppose this means I'm getting old. But simply passing through the Brandenburg Gate will always be something very special for me.
The halfmarathon follows a great course. It's not particularly exhausting, since runners are allowed to need more than three hours.
Shortly before the finish line I passed an emergency team who had just stopped giving a heart massage, the runner had died. This made all the fuss about minutes or seconds look very unimportant. As for any running event, shoes are the most important, but if you are running in a halfmarathon, you'll know this anyway.
Museum of Contemporary Art
by aliante1981
Now the Hamburg Railway Station also houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. A central place in the exhibition is taken up by the so-called Marx-collection of works by leading artists of the last 30 years, such as Erich Marx, Andy Warhol, Anself Kiefer, Robert Rauschenberg or Joseph Beuys. There is even a special section dedicated to the works of Joseph Beuys.
But the museum’s interesting not only because of its permanent collections - temporary exhibitions of contemporary art are also regularly featured.
You can also see films, videos, designs, and listen to music all blended by the same theme - contemporary art, of course!
