Karlhorst on 8th May - good or bad idea?

by JHR

And the questions keep on coming...

The last time I visited the (fascinating) German-Russian Museum, Das Haus in Karlshorst, a few years ago, the museum shut down suddenly at 2 pm and chucked me out. I assume this was due to the political demonstration that seemed to be about to kick off. Still, it was interesting to observe big blokes with short haircuts arriving outside the museum in camper vans, numerous police assembling in the side-streets of Karlshorst, and what I assume were counter-demonstrators emerging from the Karlshorst and Tierpark stations. I didn't hang around...

We will be in Berlin on 8th May. I thought this might be an appropriate day to visit the museum, on the anniversary of the signing of the surrender in 1945. Is this naive stupidity? Will this actually be a date to avoid the area? Any thoughts?

Last year there was a demonstration on 8th May celebrating the capitulation. Then again 2010 marked the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII (in Europe).

I guess it is okay to visit the museum on May 8th. If you want to be safe, come a day earlier; after all the capitulation was signed on 7th May, taking effect one day later. Or ask the hotel clerk if he had heard of a demonstration and check the museum's website (http://www.museum-karlshorst.de/).

Russians celebrate Victory Day on May 9th each year. It is one day later than in Germany because the message had to be brought to Russia and there is a different time zone. Parades, fireworks, and military displays take place on the Red Square in Moscow.
In Berlin we have a large group of Russian immigrants, many of them with German passports (claiming to be from German ancestry). They are very proud of their victory over Germany in WW II.
Last year I've been in a city train from Hellerrsdorf in the East outskirts of Berlin to the central districts, the train was packed with drunken Russians, but the athmosphere was (still) friendly. I can't see a dangerous situation being there. As Turtle already wrote, check out whether the museum is open at all.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Film to be seen: The life of the others

by PALLINA

Das Leben der Anderen is one of my favorite films; it won the Academy Award as best foreign film in 2007. I think it is a perfect film to watch if you are planning a trip to Berlin and you are interested in East Germany life before 1989.

by greentara

visit the Wasserturm in Prenzlauer Berg it's an impressive tower built in 1875. Set in the middle of a little park. During the Third Reich it's basement was used as a torture chamber and now it has been turned into apartments. wonder how many stories those walls hold. When you see it lit up at night it's magical... oh if only dreams came true....

Interesting Berlin's fashion

by matcrazy1 about Purple Phoenix

Urszula liked this store a lot. She spent... too much time inside and finally she didn't buy anything :-).

They offered clothes from collections of various less known, at least outside Berlin fashion designers like Sonja Shine, Uli Dziallas and Mari Otberg. Various pretty designs both elegant and more casual. Clothes by Berlin's fashion designers. Hmm... definetely not cheap store.
