"Rosenthaler Platz is talking" so listen carefully

Having previously stayed in the Central and Western Ku'Dam area I decided on my 3rd visit to stay in the city's eclectic Mitte neighborhood in the former East.

After much internet searching I happenened upon The Circus Hotel Mitte and could not have been happier. Although only open since Fall 2008 this is a hotel fully operational and NOT trying to find "itself".

Spendidly, its services and amenities run super-smoothly and exist to make the traveller feel well served and accomodated.

(They also run a well-regarded Hostel a block away for those in search of more basic offerings).

Unique Quality: The rooms are cheerful and immaculate: I booked the larger of the Apartments (#4) which has two separate bedrooms and a generously appointed kitchen with living/dining room area; it
also had one full toilet with shower and a half bath with toilet only. At 160 Euros it is as expensive as the hotel offers but most other, non-suited rooms are far less in price.

The Front Desk is well-versed in answering most tourist requests and offers an exceptionally large reference Library of Berlin-related books as well as Berlin-centric dvds. If only I had the patience to watch the entire 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' saga which featured this neighborhood so indelibly! For those staying for several days make sure to rent the 4 euro per person/per day monthly transit passes. Wireless is free and short-term, complimentary rentals of notebooks is available.

This is a "green" hotel so the FD is happy to give you shower supplies and the like but only as you request. Leave your towels on the bathroom floor if you need replenishment.

The complimentary breakfast is blessedly served late (until 1 pm) and there is an option to upgrade to a full 'English' breakfast for a small fee.

The restaurant "Fabisch" is very consistent and really good- so good that I even went back a week after I had checked out. The bar offerings are very extensive, too. Jared, the Head Mixiologist, is well-versed in the art of artisanal cocktails and very hospitable (he's an American in Berlin). Happily, room service at off-hours is available.

On your way to the downstairs restrooms make sure to spend time visiting the micro-exhibit which details the fascinating history of the 'Circus' building and the Fabisch family. It was once a grand department store that anchored the Rosenthaler Platz neighborhood for generations until its ownership met a terrible fate during the Nazi era.

I will always remember my front row "seat" to Rosenthaler Platz- sipping my wine, watching the trams languidly roll by as the rain misted over the denizens of Mitte dashing to-and-fro.

Best Hostel

For a reasonably priced, clean and conveniant stay when in Berlin I would strongly recommend the Circus. It is central to the main highlights and has a staff that are friendly and attentative, the desk is open 24/7.

Unique Quality: Friendly inviting and helpful staff. You will want to extend your stay as many do. A great international crowd, super for meeting fellow travellers from all around the world.

Hostel for Low Budget Tourists

You have the choice between Dormitories or private rooms (with or without private bathroom) - friends of me stayed there with a child - it's in the centre of Berlin-Mitte very close to the next subway .

It's international - you can meet a lot of people of the whole world!

Unique Quality: The price depends of the kind of room you need!

Europe's Most Plush Hostel

This hostel could be an advertisement for IKEA at its absolute best! It is tidy, trendy, and traveller friendly! A perfect pick in the former East Berlin area. Also, there is no lack of interesting things to do and see close by.

Unique Quality: This hostel is plush! Except for the fact that you are sleeping in a room with a handful of strangers, you almost forget that you are in a hostel. Very nice!

Circus Hostel - Weinbergsweg...

Circus Hostel - Weinbergsweg (there's another location too)
Just 16 Euros for the 7 person dorm room we stayed in!

Unique Quality: Very cheap, very clean, very nice. Probably the nicest hostel we stayed at, it was absolutely beatiful, and the location was so close to the U-Bahn, and very easy to get to and from.

More about Circus - The Hostel

everyone was so friendly, loved it!!

by TripAdvisor Member Harps_Sydney

We stayed here for 4 ngihts and were so happy. Everything was clean and neat and looked brand new. The staff were all lovely and were helpful with all our needs, not to mention the food and bar staff were very professional and friendly. We loved the free laptop for our room too it was very handy.

The location of the hotel was great. Close to the trains and bus, lots of nice shops and restaurants around, i dont think we could have found a better place. When i return to Berlin i will no doubt be staying at the Cirus once again.

Everything a Hotel Should Be!

by TripAdvisor Member lbb531

I stumbled upon Circus when someone mentioned it in a review for a different hotel, and I am SO glad I did. Circus is everything I think a hotel should strive for. Friendly, clean, eco-conscious, well located, and above all, a great value. Our room (double, 88 euro/night) was spacious, spotless, and very contemporary. The bathroom, with it's rain shower, was top notch, and the beds were extremely comfy. My favorite part , though, was the bean bag chair! This was not the bean bag chair we know from long ago. It was probably three feet high and conforms to your body when you sit in it (you sink all the way up to your head!). Brilliant. Too bad I couldn't fit it in my suitcase. ;)
Breakfast, included in the room rate, was very fresh and more than enough food for our needs (though those with a bigger appetite can upgrade to a full hot breakfast for a small charge). And the staff were great. Everyone was polite and very helpful when needed.
The hotel's location, in eclectic Mitte, was also a plus. The Rosenthaler Platz station is just outside the front door, and it is only one stop from Alexanderplatz, where you can connect to loads of different lines. Also, there is a bus that stops just across the road that will take you to the main train station in under 15 minutes. Honestly, though, the weather was so nice, we walked almost everywhere. Berlin is very walkable.
We absolutely loved Berlin and were gutted to only have two days there. We will be back and will, without a doubt, be staying at The Circus.
A side note - due to our limited time in the city, we took a bike tour our first day with Fat Tire Bike Tours. We thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Our tour guide, Blakely, was very friendly and well versed in Berlin's storied past. And the bikes were all in great shape. A great value for the money (20 euro for a four-hour tour). It meets every morning under the TV tower in Alexanderplatz....just a ten-minute walk from The Circus. They are on the web.

Clean, stylish place in a good location, I would come back for sure!

I don't need too tell you too much about Circus Hotel, as everything you can read on their web site is true. The Hotel is brand new as it opende its door in late 2008. Rooms are nice sized (mine was a single but I managed to have a look at double rooms as well) and, if you get the chance to have a room facing the nice and cosy courtyard, you will hear no sound from outside. I particulary liked the wood floor, the large comfy bed and the rainy shower.

For 68 Euro per night for a single room (not a bargain, but it's good value for money) you can choose between three kinds of breakfast. Mine had two croissants with strawberry jam and chocolate, coffee, some fruit and orange juice, all very tasty.

As for the location: nothing spectacular, but very well positioned at just two metro stations away from Alexanderplatz (which is the main connection point of the East part of Berlin), which means in a few minutes you can be everywhere. The Hotel is literally a few steps from the underground station, superquick and supersafe if you come back late at night.
In Rosenthalerplatz, where the building is located, there are several take away restaurants and foodshops that stay open till late.

No doubt about it, one plus of the hotel is the staff: everyone is nice and helpful. I booked via Skype (see the website, you can even call from abroad for free), that was easy and quick. At the reception you can also get a free map of Berlin, while in the elevators you will find tips about events in town and even weather forecasts!

Unfortunetely, I'm coming back to Berlin in August but my friends have already booked elsewhere...Next time, anyway, for sure I will be staying at Circus again.
I never stayed there, but my personal impression is that the adjacent Circus Hostel would be a great choice too, if you're looking for something a little cheaper.
