 | City Guesthouse Berlin: “Highly recommended”

by Stevencape This is highly recommended, a nice pension which really tries to offer its best. At first we didn't know where to check in - you have to go to the bar of the restaurant as there is not a pension reception as such. In fact the pension is really a huge flat in a mansion block which has been converted into separate rooms, so you have to go through a courtyard with a key and share the entrance hall with residents of the block. Slightly weird but you get used to it. Our room small but very clean and very quiet. There were goodies, like wine, chocolates, etc. and the lighting was good. Nice and warm in winter. Staff friendly and helpful. Minus points, not serious but the bed could perhaps do with renewing, it sagged in the middle a little bit, and the towels were thin. Also they didn't renew the toiletries after you'd used them. The shower tended to flood the floor, too. But these really were not big problems because the rest of it was so clean convenient and helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very good, you pay a bit extra but it was good value at 5€, although a bit odd to have to buy the coffee separately. A nice buffet with all kinds of good stuff. This did not bother us really but the late start could be a pain if you have a plane to catch. Would highly recommend this as good value to money to anyone wanting to visit the interesting city of Berlin. We found a good place to eat just across the big main road called Fellas, friendly, good food, not expensive at all and a nice atmosphere - but it's very popular and crowded so go early or reserve.
The location is excellent - it is very handy for the M1 tram and the Ubahn, and in an interesting area with lots of good and unusual cafes and shops.

For less than US $ 90 p/night, got a very stylish flat with plenty of space, a great bathroom with tub, a kitchen (no minibar!), a dvd/stereo/tv, a washer/dryer, and the feeling like you're actually living in Berlin, not just breezing through. The place was immaculate, and felt quite secure. It was comfortable, clean, and had a great kitchen, and an outside garden area. The best thing about it though was the staff. They were all incredibly helpful like you would not believe. They sat down with us on our first day with a map and highlighted everything we wanted to see, answered our questions, gave plenty of advice, catered to all types of travellers with different ideas on how they wanted to spend their time in Berlin!
Only a minute or so walk from the Schonehausalle U-Bahn station, we could not have hoped for a better location in Berlin. Only a few tube stops from the centre, Prenzlauer Berg has it all; shops, bars, restaurants and cafes - all friendly and welcoming and all within a few minutes walk of this guesthouse
