Christmas in Berlin

by ryding1

Travelling to Berlin for Christmas and just needed to know if the Restuarants are open on Christmas day / Boxing day

Re: Christmas in Berlin

by abalada

Yes.
Most things shut down in Germany actually on Christmas eve afternoon and evening.
On Christmas Day most restaurants and museums are already open again.
Boxing Day is like a normal Sunday. Apart from the shops everything is open.

by t_maia

Not all restaurants will be open. But it is common for people to go out and have a festive lunch together with friends and family on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so many restaurants will be catering to that crowd. Hotel restaurants usually offer Christmas Brunch. You might want to call ahead if you want to go to a certain restaurant to see if it is open or whether you need a reservation.

Some restaurants will be open, others will not. Many restaurants will offer special menus only and require reservation in advance. You will find something to eat but be prepared to either search for a while or ask for recommendations (from your hotel reception, for example).

It's a good idea to reserve a table. Also check out to see if there are any set menus especially for Christmas. (Better, but also more expensive)

Travel Tips for Berlin

by Svitata

I was in Berlin on a business trip for a week, so there really wasn't much time for me to look around the city, but if given the limited time, you may want to do some shopping along Kurfurstendamm and visit the Jewish musuem.

Victory Column

Enjoy a marvellous view over the Tiergarten from the top of it.

Moved from the front of the Reichstag to the centre of the Tiergarten in 1938, the Siegessaule, or Victory Column celebrates the military successes of Prussia. 285 steps to the top guarantees one of the best views of Berlin.

( NOTE: IT is one stop of bus 100, you can arrive this place easily by bus 100.)

Some impressive public art

by poons

American Jonathan Borofsky's 100ft aluminium creation in Berlin near the middle of the River Spree.

In fact it consists of 3 Molecule Men (bad pic. sorry it only shows 2) coming together in the middle.

Completed in 1997 for the new Allianz Corporation headquarters in Berlin.

Have a look at the website link below if you want to see more of his stuff. I love it.

Modern sculptures outdoors

by matcrazy1

Whenever you visit New National Gallery (Neue National Gallery) do not skip amazing, modern sculptures/works which are displayed outdoors.

If you like modern art go to the backside of the gallery and then downstairs to the rectangular garden (backyard) - the western sculpture garden. Visitors of the gallery gain access to the garden on request.
There were maybe 20 sculptures there.
I liked especially the ones on my picture although I have no idea who created them. If you know, e-mail me, please.

Oranienburger Strasse

by deeper_blue about Various

This is one of the main centres for nightlife in Berlin, there are numerous outdoor restaurants in the summer and lots of bars lining the street, including Silberfisch, Ambulance Barr and Lounge 808.
It stretches for a mile between Friederich Strasse and Hackesche Markt, just north of the Spree.
You'll know you're there when you see the New Synagogue looking down on you.
Be aware after dark there are likely to be sex workers hanging around.
