Not expensive dinner-place in Berlin with traditional food and beer

by Kir1304

Hello!
Could you help me?

I'm going to Berlin in January, so could you help me with some food-places there?
Could you advice me good but not expensive cafe, bar or restaurant in Berlin with traditional German food. I mean pork, sausages, beer etc.?
Somewhere not far from Gendarmenmarkt?

How much could it cost to have average dinner there?

Thank you!

Difficult. Restaurants around Gendarmenmarkt are quite upscale, so they are not cheap, and few serve "traditional German food" (perhaps read my tip on German food).

Lutter & Wegner is a restaurant directly located at Gendarmenmarkt. You could try their Sauerbraten (loosely translates into marinated beef) or their adaption of the Wiener Schnitzel. Not cheap (EUR 25+), but unless you have bad luck with the service, it's the probably the best restaurant that meets your criteria.

My above mentioned tip lists Gugelhof, Zander and Deponie. To visit Gugelhof and Zander (Guggelhof is less upscale), all you need to do is to hop on the U2 at Gendarmenmarkt (Hausvogteiplatz or Stadtmitte) and take a ride north to Senefelderplatz, and then walk down Kollwitzstraße. This takes 20 minutes.

Deponie is a bit closer to Gendarmenmarkt (take the subway to Friedrichstrasse), but it's a nice place to have a beer, I can not really recommend to have dinner there. A tad better might be Restaurant Nolle next door to Deponie, but I admit I have never been there.

Do not get talked into visiting Mutter Hoppe. It's a tourist trap.

This would include a wine.

There are two places that I know in the Gendarmenmarkt area which would satisfy your criteria (traditional food, not too expensive), but I've never eaten there (German food is a bit too boring for me). Both aren't located directly at Gendarmenmarkt, but approx 3-5 mins away and their location is not too scenic as well, so if you want atmosphere and stuff, stick to those expensive places directly at Gendarmenmarkt (Lutter and Wegner is IMHO not too bad and still affordable).
So the first restaurant is Ur-Saalfelder, serving German food from the Thuringia area. It is on Leipziger Str., opposite to the LIDL store there (quite close to U-Bahn stop Spittelmarkt). The other one is the Lowenbrau, which is quite popular with tourists and serves German food from Bavaria.

As the previous poster suggested to check out some places in Prenzlauer Berg, here would be another recommendation for that area: Zum Schusterjungen in Danziger Str. (approx 2 mins from U-Bahn stop Eberswalder Str.). It's a bit touristy as well, but still nice atmosphere, traditional German food and cheap.

Travel Tips for Berlin

Der Ampelmann!

by dlandt

This little felow nearly went extinct until some kind of pan-DDR movement brought him back. I don't know all the particulars. The chubby little pedestrian known as the Ampelmann was developed in East Germany and used on East German street corners for most of the so-called DDR's lifespan. Now, he can be found in the former West Berlin as well, a pleasant concession to the Easterners who felt their culture was completely subsumed by the Westerners. (with good reason)

Recognition to the airlift of supplies to Berlin.

by dabidc

If my memory serves me correctly there were two airports in the section of West Berlin controlled by the Allies in 1948. For several months supplies of food and fuel were flown in ,virtually non stop, from West Germany to supply the citizens and the forces in what was West Berlin.

A memorial was put in place at Templehof Air port, it stand today at the entrance to that airport.

This was another nostalgic visit and was part of a walk I made to the S.E section of Berlin in 1993.

kaDeWe

by elPierro about KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens)

The KaDeWe is Europe's 2nd largest department store. No, that number 1 is not Harrods but the GUM in Moscow. Though it is bigger, the assortiment is a bit more limited than the KaDeWe offers.

On 7 floors, several items are being sold. Naturally it's not very cheap. The most interesting part is the food section on the 6th floor. Many different kinds of food are being sold and often cooked as well. All sections contain small restaurants where all sorts of dishes are being served. One more floor up you are on the rooftop (well, just under the rooftop), where you can eat and have a nice view over Berlin. Cheap is not known in the vocabulary of the KaDeWe, prices are generally a bit higher than in other stores.
