inexpensive hotel for very short stay in Berlin

this was really inexpensive for 2 nights (~50 EUR per night/double room). Room has "bathroom" ensuite - but, hell - you cannot hang your towel in the shower cabin!
and the cabin has transparent door so if you plan going with your spouse or a very good friend - that will be OK.
since there's no closet or any kind of wardrobe - be prepared to keep your clothes in the suitcase.
receptionists didn't speak english well, but it doesn't matter. For some reason, they took our towels away (we booked 2 nights). of course, they DIDN'T explain how did it happen or who did this - it was really weird. easy access by car or public transport. tram station is across the street and goes directly to S-bahn station that leads you to SXF airport. hotel is 10 minutes on foot from Alexanderplatz.
smoking is permitted in some rooms (ask for it, if fancy smoking in your room).

Hotel or Pension in Berlin

Hello everyone,
I am planning a trip to Berlin where I will be for the first time.
We will probably arrive on a Saturday morning to leave the following day at night and I would like to ask you people if you can recommend a hotel or pension in a central area where I could take a room for 2 without having to spend a fortune (let's say withing 35-40 euros per night per person).
We would like to do some sightseeing and find a nice cozy place to eat and drink at night.
Any suggestions?

Located in the Prenzlauer Berg area, S-Bahn (commuter), subway and tram stop right around the corner. A 7-minute-ride from Alexanderplatz, lots of bars, clubs and restaurants around.

Hi!
You can get really good hotels in Berlin for 80 EUR if you are lucky. Last time I checked even the Savoy near Ku-Damm was 79 EUR on www.hrs.de. I suggest you check out the prices there (hrs.de really has the best deals!) and ask us again with a choice of a few hotels. Then we can tell you about the best locations.
As for eat and drink at night, you should check out the VT members' Berlin pages. Lots of restaurant tips there.

Berlin is very very spread out, it can take up to 2 hours to get from one end of the city to the other with public transport. Where you stay should be influenced by how you travel to Berlin. If you fly in and out of Tegel stay in Charlottenburg or near Zoo train station, if you fly in and out of Schoenefeld or leave by train from Ostbahnhof stay in the area around Ostbahnhof or S-Bahn stop Warschauer Str. For Berlin main train station the area around Friedrichstrasse is prime.
Aside from pensions and hotels check out hostels and holiday appartments too. Many hostels have private rooms for very moderate prices. Places I like are

I can also recommend that you pick up the free guide that is available from many hostels, it is a small leaflet published by Sandeman's New Berlin Tours. You should be able to download the leaflet from their website.

At the end of October many of Berlin's landmarks are illuminated for a couple of days. During those days a couple of special events take place aswell: e.g. late-night-shopping
There are special "lightseeing" tours which take you to the main sights.
Lets hope that the sponsors will let us see the lights in the coming years too!
The Schönhausen Palace

The Schönhausen Palace was closed for some years and has now been renovated and was reopened to the public in late 2009. The palace stands in extensive grounds and the last time I visited was on a sunny spring afternoon, and it is a popular place with local families taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings and grounds. The palace dates from 1664 and was later remodelled in 1764 in a French Rococo style that you can see today. The palace was damaged during WW2 but was quickly repaired after the war. It then had a number of uses including an officer’s club, school, president’s residence and to accommodate offical guests. Mikhail Gorbachev and his wife were amongst the last to use it in 1989. The Palace is sign posted from Pankow U & S Bahn Station and is a 25 minute walk.
A Souvenir from ancient DDR

Well, we have heard that there existed this kind of souvenirs, but we didn't know we were to find them so unexpectedly. We had a good time trying on helmets and military caps. You can buy a DDR honours medal for less than 2 euros. It was just in front of Pergamonmuseum, at Museuminsel. Vale, habíamos oído que existían este tipo de souvenirs, pero no sabíamos que íbamos a encontrarlos tan inesperadamente. Pasamos un buen rato probándonos cascos y gorros militares. Puedes comprar medallas de honor de la RDA por menos de 2 euros. Estaba justo a la salida del Pergamonmuseum.

Because Berlin is such a big city it has many districts and most of them have an area where all the nightlife is. In central Berlin , which is known as Mitte (German for middle) there is one street called Oranienburger Str. which is just heaving with bars and restaurants and there are some to be found in the streets that go off of there too. And not too far away is HackescheMarkt, a square with many bars, restaurants and clubs. Some clubs do have a dress code.
