mellow vibes in east Berlin
Unique Quality: well located for going out in east berlin, bar with good selection of bottled German beers (not as cheap as in grocery, but more convenient)

smack in the middle:bohemian Berlin Friedrichshain
If you are staying in Berlin I recommend this hostel. It has the best personality and one of the nicer locations. While Mitte may be more central, it's worth it to consider staying in Friedrichshain, where most of the good clubs are only a train or tram stop away.
Unique Quality: a great atmosphere and café out front, close to all the genuinely good nightlife

Better than it might seem
If you get this place out of the guidebook, check in at night and leave Freidrichschain the next day, like I did, you might be forgiven for thinking you've been duped. The area along Warshauer Str. is pretty rundown. But a few blocks in the opposite direction to the hostel and you are in amsterdam - but cooler! Oh, and the locals are honest - left my passport and tickets in the internet cafe and got them back from the cop shop.
Unique Quality: Mural on the walls, metal in the bar and silent tolerance of someone with a ridiculously large bag.
