Seeing It From As Near...
by coceng
One of my fond memories in Berlin would be seeing the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtniskirche from as near as I could get.
It stands majestically on Breitscheiplatz.
On the left side of the photo, you can almost see the the 1961 built, a modern octagonal Hall Of Worship with its blue stained glass windows.
Brandenburg Tor Reconstruction
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
Unexpected hitch happens with us in the front of an arch of the Brandenburg Gate - I saw with surprise, that the landscape behind an arch differs from habitual. I shout: "There is one more arch!". We approach close, and I saw the Parisian Triumphal arch! Only there I understand, that the Brandenburg Gate from the western side is veiled by a cloth on which the Parisian sister - the Triumphal arch and Tour d'Eiffel are drawn . When we passed the gate, I looked back, and I saw on a cloth of east of the gate, the native Red Square and Vasily Blazhenniy Cathedral. Germans are able to make repair beautifully and with sense!
Hitler's Bunker
by tyerks
If you do the Berlin Walks Tour, they will take you to a car park. You'll probably be thinking, now why are we here? Well, it's the site of where Hitler's Bunker was. There's no marker to show you, or anything on the map, because they don't want people flocking to it. I think it's good that they don't have anything to mark it, because such a vicious man doesn't deserve it. However, it was interesting to know that I stood right above where he shot and killed himself.
Prussian Porcelain
by yooperprof about KPM - Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur
In the 18th Century, the Kings of Prussia (like other European monarchs) encouraged the development of a domestic ceramics industry. Porcelain was one of the most glamorous of all domestic items, and no country would be satisfied until it was producing its own supply of fine tableware, vases, and gegaws.
KPM - the Royal Porcelain Factory - was established by Frederick the Great in 1763. It's still producing porcelain 240 years later. Their shop in the Mitte district displays their wares in a glamorous setting - near the interection of Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse. I came into the shop just to look, but the sale clerk I spoke to was quite friendly and informative. Of course, if you have to ask how much any of the beautiful merchandise costs, you probably can't afford it.
Berlin is said not to be one...
by stijn_swinne
Berlin is said not to be one of the safest cities in the eastern part. I have to say I haven't noticed that. Maybe in the outskirts it is, but that's not where a tourist goes. One night I went completely alone through the city, i had to be at the completely other side, for a special gig of Hammerfall and Virgin Steele. At the beginning I felt very anxious, but I soon realised that nothing much would happen. If I would tell you the complete story, many would say I am insane. A few times it's scary, but there's always someone to help you (specially when you have to return to the hotel, but you missed the last metro and you have to be at the other side of Berlin..., Many thanks for the very helping man from the Berlin trainstation...)
