Events/festivals in weekend 21-24 August

by oleros

I had a real good time during the Kulturfest in Berlin last summer and have been looking for an overview of events/festivals/other fun stuff this weekend - Any tips?

I'd also like some tips of things to do that don't include the typical sightseeing as I've done that already. Thinking of renting a bicycle but where should we go? Some green areas, villages etc in the outskirts would be nice.

Are you aware that there will be the Marathon runs of the Athletics World Championships on Sat and Sun (22/23 Aug) this coming weekend? They run through the city.

Such championships are always accompanied by a cultural programme.

See here:

The festival site is Pariser Platz, entry is free.

Travel Tips for Berlin

The best activity I did in...

by sooster

The best activity I did in Berlin was definitley the 8 hour walking tour of the city. It sounds like torture, but is so informative that it doesnt feel that long. Its run by 2 british blokes especially for the backpacking lot and theres loads of drink breaks ect. I learnt more that day about modern history than in 3 years of history lessons! Leaves every summer day from outside the Old Jewish Synagogue in East Berlin at 10.30, dont miss it! What I miss is the warm summer nights when a bunch of us from the hostel, from about 5 different countries would all go out to a club, then wander home at 6am stopping for kebabs and generally having a laugh. Its times like these that I would think, God I really never want to go home ever... Simple pleasures and all that!

St Hedwig Cathedral

by Audrey118

Nearby, is the German State Opera which was built in 1741-43 by Knobelsdorff and the St Hedwig Cathedral with this big dome built in 1773 in the same style of the Roman's Pantheon. It was built by Bruing and Le Geay and finished by Boumann in 1773. The cathedral was the first Catholic church in the protestant Berlin.

Flughafensee - enjoy a great lake

by tierecke

Berlin is full of lakes.
My favorite one is Flughafensee (Airport lake). It's very close to Tegel Airport and you can see airplanes landing and taking off while you're relaxing on the shore of a great lake, or while taking a swim there.
The lake is inside a forest and is absolutely beautiful and not very toured. During the week you'll be here alone more or less.

How to get there? Take U6 to Otisstraße, from which it is a short walk (you go down the station, turn left, cross the big street and you are inside the forest, a short walk and you reach the lake).

Absolutely great.

Berlin State Library

by matcrazy1

I enjoyed the architecture of The Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library) both outside and inside. The building opened in 1978 at Potsdamer Straße was designed by architect Hans Scharoun. There were impressive architectural landscapes with a total of 910 workstations in the General and Special Reading Rooms.

I bought a day ticket for 0.50 € at ticket machine by the entrance (on my picture). This ticket entitled me to enter the reading rooms and view items of the reference libraries. There were numerous computer workstations with access to internet (= VT pages :-) in General Reading Room.

Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin (Tiergarten)

General Reading Room:
Mon - Fri: 9.00 am - 9.00 pm,
Sat: 9.00 am - 7.00 pm,
Sun - closed.
