Air Berlin

Of course, Air Berlin is not limited to Berlin, but I have to write this somewhere!!
In the last trip, I traveled in Air Berlin twice. No issues. I mean no problem with checkin, no lost luggage, no delayed flight. The point is I get the same level of satisfaction that I have got with pretty much any other airline, but for a MUCH lesser price here. In fact, I should say better considering that they serve "food", i mean coffee, cake or sandwich or something even on short trips. I will definitely fly again. For what you pay, you definitely get better service here.
Air Berlin from the UK

For this trip to Berlin we got the best price with "Air Berlin". This company seems to be growing and growing. At the moment they fly from Manchester and London Stansted from the UK. As "budget" airlines go they seem to be one of the best - and the first one I have flown on you get a sandwich and drink still for free!
To Berlin with Air Berlin

This is the first time I flew with Air Berlin and I hope to do more often. It is a company as always, offer free drinks and a snack on all its flights, newspaper (all German) and sweets when you boarding into the plane. Air Berlin flies from Malaga to Berlin Tegel Airport 4 times per week, the flight takes about 3 hours. Besides the food and drink also make music videos, movies and cartoons.

Excellent budget airline. No fight for seats as they are allocated. They still give you a complimentary drink and sandwich on the short flight from England. Flights from Stansted (london) will take you in to tegel. You can do this flight for about £30 on the internet.

Berlin has two main airports, Tegel and Schonefeld. Tegel is the busiest one, and serves most of the major airlines and destinations. Schonefeld used to be the airport for the cities in eastern Europe, but now serves a number of budget airlines, including Ryan Air. Tegel airport has plenty of regular bus services to the centre, including #X9 and #109 to the Bahnhof Zoo. Schonefeld is further out, but links to the city center via the S-Bahn and regular train are easily available.

Air Berlin

Air Berlin is offering very inexpensive flights from JFK Airport to Europe through Duesseldorf.
Anyone have any experience with it? How's the service (or lack thereof)? Are their check-in and luggage restrictions RyanAir-esque? Thanks!

I've always very much enjoyed flights with Air Berlin. Good service (free drinks and snacks/ meals, for example) and friendly staff.
These are the luggage restrictions for long-haul flights according to their home page:
The two-piece concept applies to flights to and from the USA, as well as to and from Canada. This allows economy class passengers to check in two items of baggage weighing up to 23 kg each, and business class passengers to check in two items of baggage weighing up to 32 kg each.
For more info on their service:

Elena

Air Berlin stands somewhat inbetween the really cheap budget airlines and the regular carriers such as Lufthansa. The German government has just signed a deal with AB for their Bonn-Berlin shuttle service. If it's good enough for the government to use for their officers, it should be reasonable for you to use it, as well! If you have a good offer, go for it!

I've travelled with AirBerlin several times and I was never disappointed. It's not really a very cheap airline like Ryanair or Easyjet but offers reasonable prices. And their service is acceptable as long as you don't expect luxury.
I would say: go for it.

air berlin are way better than lufthansa for shorthaul flights.
not sure about longhaul though.
if i remember right then their USA flights are being operated by what was formerly known as LTU airline.
a german charter coompany that took you from a to b with no thrills, but usually also with no trouble.

i just stepped of an 11 hour air berlin flight from bangkok to berlin and it was a very nice experience.
we had free food 3 times during the flight and soft drinks and coffee was free aswell as a glass of wine with each meal.
leg space was acceptable without being great, but i am happy with what i got especially considering that i saved 300 euros compared to the other available flights.

Thanks, Claus!
Air Berlin must be monitoring the forum, because the fares went up $200 right after I asked the question! :o)
Now their fares are less than $100 cheaper than the nonstop flights, so I'll probably take one of those instead. Unless Air Berlin's fares drop again (hint hint!) ;)

More a Charter airline than a no-frills budget airline. Thus they will serve food.
They do also wet leases. E.g. for Air Berlin. Thus on an Air Berlin flight the plane and crew could be by Germania, albeit everything looks like Air Berlin.
Low-fare airline Frankfurt or Amsterdam to Vienna?
by elbegewa
We're planning an open jaws trip to Germany, Czech Republic, & Austria.
To save time for sightseeing we are considering taking an intermediate flight between Vienna and either Frankfurt or Amsterdam.
The transatlantic airlines offer only expensive flights for that leg. What good low-fare airlines serve those routes?
