Travel Tips for Berlin

Babylon !...

by coceng

To me, this is the highlight ! The Ishtar Gate.
Although a reconstruction, it depicted the nearest glimpse that we could get to the Babylon Empire which is lost to our eyes in modern time !
It's from 6th BC.
Glazed clay bricks, both original & replicas are made up of this amazing sight in Pergamon Museum.
Situated in Gallery 9.

Dress code and local costumes

by matcrazy1

Generally I can say that Berliners on a streeet dress either casual and elegant, in contrast to other German cities some folks (and not exclusively young) dress somewhat strange as well :-). So, there is NO general dress code on Berlin street. It's a mix of say Californian casual style and elegant, "aristocratic" Paris fashion. Although I would rather dress elegant clothes both for opera/philharmony or for top class restaurant and for... a casino (European casinos are quite different than Americans :-). In other places... I am a tourist :-).

I didn't see any Berliners dressed up in local costumes, are there any? Instead, I could see these two guys on my picture in front of the entrance to Hotel Adlon Kempinski next to Branderburg gate. I saw page-boys and bellhops dressed in the original bright red uniforms of the hotel.
It was the most expensive hotel in Berlin and maybe in Germany (280.00 to 845.00 ? per double room per one night not a week) and the most luxurious hotel of the Golden Twenties.

Kaiser W Gedachnichtkirche and a sculpture.

My return for the Schonberg area was along Tauentzienstrasse, with a visit to Ka De We department store to view the enticing and exotic delicacies available on the top floor .

The Europa Centre is on the north side of the street and is also worth a visit.

Shopping Break at Breitscheidplatz

by TinyTuck

To take a break from shopping at the Kudamm you can either sit in one or the other luxuary café, or just hang out at Breitscheidplatz (where the Memorial Church stands) with it's numerous food and souvenir stands and different kinds of people sitting on benches and by the fountain watching street musicians or artists performing. Food, souvenirs, arts

You don't need a car

by Alex_71

The best way for moving in Berlin is by subway (u-bahn). With that you can reach every part of the city and you don't have to fight with the traffic. You can use also the S-bahn and the trams. The system of connection i have seen and used in Berlin is one of the best i have seen in all Europe, and they are not like the italians train! They arrive ever at the right time! You can do a daily ticket that it costs 6.20 Euros or you can do a ticket just for one race that cost 1.40 Euro. The U-bahn and S-bahn are safe also during the eveing, obiusvly it's better you don't go in certain area of the city but that's a normal rule to use everywhere in the world
